I'm interested in majoring in Biology and Society, which is offered at both CALS and HumEc. However, I did not take a SAT II in math-- a req of HumEc-- and I would rather stay away from it as math isn't my strongest subject and my math teacher for pre-cal was a joke. (Everyone I know who took Math II got in the 500s, very low 600s.)

However, CALS seems to have a strong emphasis in the environment/agriculture, which I do not have any ECs that relate to this...

I did intern at Kaiser Hospital, which is what I will base my suppl. essay on-- but I feel that it would be stronger for HumEC then CALS...I am planning on going to med. school.

To make it more complicated, CALS recommends a subject test in math.

Does anyone have any suggestions/advice?

If CALS recommends math, you should probably take it to be safe. They recommend it for a reason. I suggest you take a Math subject test.

I don't know much about CALS but your hospital EC sounds good, considering you're Pre-med. While CALS has an agriculture major, it's not focused on that major...there are lots of majors there, including AEM, which is like Cornell's business program. It's true AEM used to be more agri-business focused, but apparently it's less so now, but I don't know much about it...the point is, there's a variety of majors.

I say you apply for whichever program you're more interested in. Both offer Bio & Society, but the mission of the college's are different. Either one would be good for premed.

Please don't think CALS is just agriculture. I'm applying to HumEc and when people hear that, they're like "ohh..so you're like gonna study ecology?" and it's like no, I want to study Policy Analysis & Management and go into public policy...don't let the title of the college fool you into thinking it's all about one thing. It's the College of Agriculture AND life sciences, not college of farming.

Thanks--that was helpful.

I'm just afraid of taking a math subject test-- so that's why I'm leaning toward CALS just because its not a requirement, just a recommendation, whereas humanEc requires it. I realize that it will hurt my application by not having a math subject test becuase they recommend it, but I think I might make up for it on other areas--I've taken more science classes then required, for example.

I'm actually kind of a hypocrite telling you to take a Math SAT II because I didn't take one either and I'm applying to HumEc. The thing is, I'm a transfer so I didn't take one in HS, and now that I want to go to HumEc, it's required...I don't know if I have to or not. I emailed admissions a couple days back and am waiting for an answer, but I also really don't want to take one!

I wonder if it would be a big deal if I didn't take one even though it was required as a freshman applicant?

Sadly I think I know the answer to this : (

I was just so happy when I did the oct sAT cause I thought I was done...I guess one more subject test wouldn't be that much. Please let me know that the admissions tell you though : )

Id assume if its required its required. To make sure, cause u dont want to take chances, call them up. How did everyone do so bad on Math II anyway, it barely had precal in it. Get like 10 wrong is still a 800 basically. But anyway, if you did well on Sat math section you can't possibly do too bad on Math II. It's not that much harder.

To put in my shameless alumna plug for Biology and Society...it's an awesome major and the core courses are the same for students taking the major in CAS, CALS or HumEc. The biggest difference for CALS and HumEc will be the graduation requirements....and it's a big difference.

Eric, since you wanted to know - admissions said that as a transfer, I don't have to submit any SAT subject tests, or even my SAT I! (gonna do it anyway though). But yeah for HumEc it's a freshman requirement and for CALS it's strongly recommended.
