Caltech CS Update: Theory vs. Practical?

There are a bunch of old threads here (and on Quora) that talk about CS at Caltech being more theoretical than CS at other schools that are highly-ranked for CS. Most of those threads are nearing 10 years old.

Does anyone have insight into how the CS department at Caltech has (or hasn’t) changed along those lines in recent years?

(Weighing a few acceptances here.)

I’m interested in hearing about this as well.

Last year when my DD had to choose between MIT and Caltech for CS this was her main concern. After her conversations with Caltech CS major students she choose MIT even though we are Southern California residents and attending Caltech would be much more convenient. She was also advised against attending Caltech for CS by a former Caltech professor. She actually was advised if not MIT, to go to UCB or UCLA for CS, but not to Caltech. But I can see that for a right person Caltech can be a preferred choice.

Caltech is famous for emphasizing heavily on theory … not just in CS, but in every field!
