Cambridge or Stanford

Which one's better ? Cambridge in UK ?

Stanford . . . .

"Stanford . . . . "

No. Maybe, but not so definitely as you’d express it like that.

For pure reputation, obviously Cambridge. I’ve never seen Stanford ranked a world #1, or even #2.

For rigour of undergraduate teaching, and the tutorial system, Cambridge again.

For recognition in the US, probably equal, and in more US mad areas possibly Stanford.

Outside of the US, not everyone has heard of Stanford (mainly Harvard/MIT) but everyone has heard of Oxford and Cambridge.

For individual subjects, Stanford probably beat Cambridge in some areas, and Cambridge will beat Stanford in others.

Don’t let your US bias get in the way - HYPSM are very very good schools, but when it comes down to a pitch against Cambridge, then in terms of recognition only Harvard and MIT compete.

THES reputation - Harvard, MIT, Cambridge
QS rankings - 2010 Cambridge, 2011 Cambridge, 2012 MIT, Cambridge, Harvard
US News World rankings, #2 Cambridge.

HOWEVER
I wouldn’t let the reputation decide it for you - I’d consider the location, the cost, whether you like the idea of 1:1 tuition with academics, whether you prefer to focus on 2-3 subjects or broaden out in a US system etc.

Cambridge for reputation, history, concentration and teaching.
Stanford for US life and more flexibility/breadth.
