Hi! I’m considering applying to the Caminos al Futuro program at George Washington University. Has anyone here attended it in the past?
It is an all-expense-paid summer program that lasts 3 weeks, and it’s only for high-achieving juniors who have “demonstrated service and leadership in the Latino communities”. I would receive 3 college credits and it’s completely free. It sounds pretty cool, but I’m not sure if it’s the right fit for me.
My grandma was born and raised in Cuba, but she never taught Spanish to my dad so I don’t know any Spanish. Even though I’m ¼ Hispanic (which is enough for programs and college apps), I don’t really identify as Hispanic. Do you think I should still apply to this program? I don’t want to be the only non-Spanish speaker in the program…
My other options are LEDA and QuestBridge, which I haven’t heard back from, or a non-credit program at UCSD that I’m guaranteed to get into.
Thanks so much for any advice!
I’m in a similar boat. I am 1/2 Spanish (my mother was born and raised in Spain) but like you have never really identified as Hispanic growing up. I am applying because
- The program is not for Hispanic and latino students but rather students who have shown interest in issues pertinent to Hispanic and latinos.
I know that the work I have done in politics and policy (worked on Hispanic/latino outreach on a San Diego Congressional campaign, ALCU “know your rights” outreach in predominantly Hispanic communities etc) reflects this. My Spanish is approaching proficiency (on a good day) but it’s clear to me that is not a requisite for admission.
The application is not extensive, so I would say that if you feel that you at all meet the criteria, apply.
Did any of you end up applying? I got in and I’m hoping to meet others that did.
Hi, I did! @mikemike101
Is there anyway I can contact you!? @lauraims
