I know USC had some money before the campaign. How much does USC have in total?

According to USC’s website:

Endowment (as of June 30, 2012)
$3.5 billion

I’m not sure if that includes any of the money donated as part of the campaign so I’m guessing the current endowment total is somewhere in the neighborhood of $6 billion (or close to that).

[Facts and Figures | About USC](Facts and Figures - About USC)

I see. So USC is trying to secure somewhere around $8B to $9B for its endowment.

Fundraising on this scale can be complicated. There is a difference in endowment and a campaign to raise funds. Usually at the beginning of a huge campaign there is what is called a “quiet phase”. The president and board of trustees, with professional advice, set a goal for the campaign. In the case of the Campaign for USC the goal is $6 billion. Large donations given at the very beginning of a major campaign may have been in negotiations for months during the “quiet phase”.

Part of the campaign funds are set aside to add to SC’s endowment. Part of campaign funds are spent for new buildings, research, scholarships, faculty recruitment, campus beautification and other purposes. My guess is the endowment is now probably around $4 billion. It should be reported officially at the end of the fiscal year.

There have been donations of huge amounts, but there are those who donate generously month after month. Others have made provisions in wills for funds to be given to USC. Support groups such as USC Associates pledge large sums each year. Town & Gown and other groups donate scholarship funds and have for decades. Alumni groups across the globe also give to the university, mainly for scholarships.

The latest total given to the campaign is nearing $2.7 billion. Some of that has been spent on buildings, scholarships, library acquisitions and other academic purposes.

It is a tribute to the alumni and friends of SC the number of individual donors is now over 200,000.

There are currently several high dollar donations in the negotiation process.

Trust me Trojans that the 2013-2014 school year is going to be a game changing year in terms of fundraising.
