Campus Atmosphere?

Hello, I'm a rising Senior looking at colleges to apply to and I'd like to know the campus atmosphere of UMichigan. Since I can't visit, mostly due to financial reasons, I would assume this is the second best option. (If it helps I'm going to be an engineering major)

How competitive is the student body?

Does the student body tend to focus more on sports or academics?

With such a large student body, do you at all seem to feel lost or just another statistic?

How friendly is the student body?

What makes the campus different from other colleges/universities?

What stats would I need to be consider a match(I'm OOS)?

Thanks!

How competitive is the student body?
Engineering school is hard and requires a lot of work, but it isn't cutthroat.

Does the student body tend to focus more on sports or academics?
Engineering school is a lot of work, so probably academics; but everybody loves Michigan Football.

With such a large student body, do you at all seem to feel lost or just another statistic?
No, there are plenty of things to do on campus and many ways to define yourself as a person.

How friendly is the student body?
Pretty friendly.

What makes the campus different from other colleges/universities?
I dunno, havent been to many other campuses. It's very liberal. you should make visit if you want to really know.

What stats would I need to be consider a match(I'm OOS)?
GPA >3.7 UW; SAT >2000; ACT >30. These are rough estimates. Check some statistics of people who have been accepted in recent years.

How competitive is the student body?
Varies from program to program. In the b-school, I've found a good group of friends to study with. We help each other fill out test review packets, quiz and tutor each other.

Does the student body tend to focus more on sports or academics?
Theres more to Michigan just "sports" or "academics."

With such a large student body, do you at all seem to feel lost or just another statistic?
This is all up to you. If you take the time and effort, you will find your niche whatever that may be.

How friendly is the student body?
Friendly enough. But again, experiences do vary.

What makes the campus different from other colleges/universities?
Big 10 Burrito, safe, cosmopolitan feel...see my other post in the Why Michigan over other schools thread.

How competitive is the student body?
Michigan can be intense if you chose to make it so, but generally in a healthy way. As meterorain said, Michigan is generally not cutthroat.

Does the student body tend to focus more on sports or academics?
It obviously depends on the student, but generally speaking, Michigan students are more involved in academics than anything else. Although football, Hockey and partying are always present, they take a backseat to academics and other intellectual pursuits.

With such a large student body, do you at all seem to feel lost or just another statistic?
At first, I dare say many students are overwhelmed with the size of the University. But in a short amount of time, students learn how to handle the size and make the most of what the university has to offer...which is considerable.

How friendly is the student body?
Depends on your point of view. Generally speaking, Michigan students tend to be friendly.

What makes the campus different from other colleges/universities?
Michigan is, from what I have seen, the most well rounded university in the country. Given its resources and versitility, the university can truly allow a person to explore their passions to the fullest, regardless of what they may be.

What stats would I need to be consider a match(I'm OOS)?
Unweighed GPA over 3.7, ACT/SAT of at least 30/2000 (if you are applying to engineering, be sure to have over a 30 in the Math section of the ACT or over a 700 on the math section of the SAT).

"Although football, Hockey and partying are always present, they take a backseat to academics and other intellectual pursuits."

I think next year, hockey is getting bumped up to the passenger seat for me =].
