My D went for a campus visit to the University of Michigan in June and was told then that they prefer kids to audition at their campus auditions, but that they do go to Chicago for Unifieds. Because we have already made one trip to Ann Arbor, I was hoping to audition in Chicago. (We live in the Southeast).

My question is are kids that audition on campus at an advantage to kids that audition in Chicago? Should we go to Chicago Unifieds and also go to Ann Arbor too?..this would be a stretch for us! Based on the number of kids that audition on campus vs. Unifieds, do more kids get accepted from the campus auditions? (Understanding that more kids may audition on campus because of the number of weekends available…so, is it balanced based on the numbers)?

Thanks…hope some folks that have been through the process can help. Of course, this is all depending on whether she gets an invitation to audition!!

My son auditioned in NYC. He was accepted to the program and is currently a freshman. I will ask him to ask his classmates where they auditioned. I’m not sure what you meant by should you go to Chicago and Ann Arbor… I doubt they would allow you to audition in Chicago AND Ann Arbor.

lojosmo, thanks so much for your reply. I am sorry I was not clear about going to Chicago Unifieds and also Ann Arbor. I meant that we have other schools that we plan to audition for at the Chicago Unifieds, and U of M will also be in Chicago (and I would really like for her to audition for them at Unifieds because of the cost of another trip to Ann Arbor). Should we plan on a seperate trip to Ann Arbor in addition to going to Chicago for Unifieds. Of course, ideally it would be wonderful if we could do all campus auditions, but that simply is not possible for our family.

I would appreciate it so much if you would ask your son to take a poll of his classmates audition locations. My D loved her visit to Ann Arbor and U of M…her absolute dream school (along with just about every other child auditioning! :)

Congrats to your son! I hope his Freshman year will be awesome!

My daughter is a junior at Umich…loves it by the way!! I don’t have the breakdown of numbers from her class that were accepted from unifieds vs. on campus, but I do know of at least a couple that were from unifieds.

Since you have visited the campus once, which is important, that is the main thing. I believe that is why they encourage on campus auditions, for people to get the feel and fibe of the campus which you have already done.

I believe you will be fine going to unifieds, she just needs to have a great audition whereever she is!!

I haven’t seen what they have posted for this year, but last year at Chicago Unifieds Michigan offered audition spots on Sunday, the day before most of the others began. It was a bit of a scramble to get registered for then, but worth it, as it left the remaining days clear for other schools.

Thank you all for your replys! We would love another trip to Ann Arbor, but it will work out the way it is suppose to where ever we audition! :)

Christie, yes Michigan is coming again on Sunday, so we have thought about doing that day. Was it a little more relaxed on that day?

lojosmo, I’m looking forward to what your son finds out. Trying to justify another trip to Ann Arbor is proving very difficult with my husband, but your son’s findings may help give me some added “ammunition” for my plea/argument to him! :)

Hollins, actually Unifieds is really fun for the kids-lots of movement and lots of kids (1,200 last year in Chicago) but good feelings all around. My daughter misses it! So, I don’t know if one day is more relaxed than others, but there were less people milling around on Sunday as most were arriving. It was just a bit of hassle making sure we got that day. My d asked for it on paper, then didn’t get placed there, and it took a couple of phone calls for me to straighten it out. But people were very nice. Just arrange things as early as possible! Do stay at the Palmer House, if possible, and if you can afford it, on the executive floor, where you can get breakfast and snacks are served all day, as well as a dinner’s worth of appetizers in the evening. Saves money and hassle! Cheaper rates, including nonrefundable lowest ones (get trip insurance) are on the Palmer House website if you plug in your reservation dates. It was less stressful to arrive on Saturday, and Roosevelt also held it’s dance audition on Sunday evening.

Great information Christie…that you so much. We are beginning to schedule some things now, but have to get some more applications in also! Thanks again for all your help!

If you send me an email with your email on it (by clicking on my name), I can send you a list of who was at Chicago Unifieds last year, along with some forms we used to compare colleges, spreadsheets for getting things done, etc. This offer goes for everyone!

thanks so much logosmo…I totally understand. My D still leaves under the same roof as I do, and I feel that way! Look forward to hearing from you!

My daughter is a Sophomore MT at Michigan…she auditioned at Unifieds in Chicago. She had never visited Ann Arbor when she auditioned. From the class of 2014, it is my understanding there were two accepted from Chicago Unifieds…her and one boy. I think auditioning in Chicago will be just fine…Break a leg to your daughter, Unifieds is great fun!!! Just make sure she sticks to the 16 bars…The program in Michigan is just wonderful and I hope things go well for your daughter!

My son is a senior MT at Michigan. There are 3 in his class who were accepted from the Chicago Unifieds. We did not visit campus prior to him being accepted.
