How's the campus life at SUNY at Buffalo compared to SBU? From what I'm hearing (albeit, old post) SBU campus life is horrible (horrible orginazations, ghostland campus grounds, etc.) Is this true about SBU? Is SUNY at Buffalo really "city-like?" (I'm a NYC kind of guy).

Rahmel,

I know nothing about SBU exept that it has an excellent academic reputation, especially for the sciences. My D is a soph humanities student at Buffalo. She is very pleased with her choice. Here’s what I know, and what seems to be her experience so far. First of all Buffalo is a city, a good, oldfashioned, northeast rustbelt city. But it’s not NYC. UB also has two main campuses: south campus is nearer to downtown, but the big, newer campus is located in the suburb of Amherst. The Amherst campus is huge and very much functions like a small city, but it is not urban. There is a lot going on, on campus, in terms of activities and events. There are lots of opportunities for campus jobs as well. Students are very friendly and down to earth. There is a sizable contingent of commuters and students from nearby who go home at weekends but nevertheless my D doesn’t feel that the school feels like a suitcase school and in fact she’s made quite a lot of friends whose families live locally, which has given her a nice network, especially since she’s pretty far from home and can’t come home that often.

I think you should definitely do a little more research, and maybe visit if you have the opportunity.

Buffalo-
Great speakers and student association activities as far as I can see and from what events my freshman son has and is planning on attending.
Lots of clubs,ect.
Seem like all the kids love it up there. Son made friends quickly. Has lots of work to do (hard major) but makes time for fun.
Roommate is from Buffalo. Great match for our Long Island son. I have never heard that he has gone home for a weekend, nor has son stated that anyone leaves on the weekend.

SB- We live very closeby.
Obviously great education.
Very suburban (though Buffalo campuses are too).
Students are likely happy (friends kids are) but do not rave about it like the Buffalo kids do.

Campus life is pretty good. But, it’s the sort of place that people tend to go off with friends to various places around the area (and normally go off campus) on weeknds. A lot of local friends go home to families on weekends, but those who live off campus tend to stay. Compared to Stony, it definitely wins in terms of living on campus.

North Campus is not in the city, Amherst is a suburban area outside of the city. Not even close to a NYC atmosphere. The South(Main St.) campus is at the end of the subway line which runs to downtown, HSBC arena for concerts/hockey etc., also, some good clubs for music and restaurants. There are lots of cool clubs, restaurants and shops on Elmwood, which you can get to on the public bus. Buff St. is located in the Elmwood section. The North (Amherst) Campus literally has everything you could possibly need right on campus.

I think one thing that many downstaters tend to be shocked by is the size of Buffalo. Even though Buffalo is the 2nd biggest city in the state, it isn’t NYC by a long shot. Once you get past that, the city is a nice place to be. The nice part about UB is that it co-exists with the surrounding community. Unlike many friends at smaller schools, I feel like locals really are happy to see students out and about.

just my 2 cents about campus life

different environments but a lot of long islanders/New York City people at UB and they all seem to love it… campus functions like a city… you really have to visit before you go here to make sure you are okay with the way the campus is set up
