Campus Preview Weekend

My son was admitted EA. A Campus Preview Weekend (CPW) is taking place in April for all admitted students, and parents have also been invited. I need help from those that have attended CPW in the past to help me determine if I will benefit from the activities at CPW.
I will really appreciate the opinion of both parents and students.

Thanks

CPW is generally an extremely helpful event for students and parents to determine whether MIT is a good place for the student to be. Admitted students stay with current students, and get to see first-hand what workload and campus life are like. And there are events planned through the weekend so admitted students can check out academic departments, extracurricular activities, housing options, and research opportunities.

I tend to advise people on CC to attend CPW whenever possible, because I’ve seen visiting MIT, especially during CPW, to have a polarizing effect for many people – either they say, “Yes, this is definitely where I want to be,” or they say, “No, one of the other schools I was accepted to is a much better fit for me.”

I completely agree with Mollie. When I took my daughter to visit MIT during her junior year of high school, she spent an overnight there, and because my sister and I spent some time on campus, we came to understand why the school could be such a great fit for her. But when she was admitted to MIT and other schools, my husband wasn’t so sure. In particular, he couldn’t really see why his very artistic daughter would choose MIT over Yale, which was about $6,000 less expensive per year at the time. He took her back east in the spring of her senior year to attend CPW and also visit Yale, and although he’d been quite dubious about MIT on the trip out, he was completely convinced that was the best fit for her on the return home. I do think you’ll learn a great deal about the student culture and the many, many opportunities available to students there.

Our daughter designed the poster in your son’s tube. It’s the fourth year in a row that she’s designed the EA poster, and this year she told us, “It’s a strange feeling, knowing that I won’t be able to meet any of the students who’ll get this and come to MIT, because I’ll have graduated.” Congrats to your son!

@CalAlum: wow that’s cool! tell your daughter that the poster is awesome (: i love it!

Thanks for your help, there are 4 of people that I value their opinion on this board, you, Chris, CalAlum and PiperXP. I will definitely attend.

After reading your post I went to take another look at the poster, I know how proud you must feel to see your own child doing something very commendable. My son wants to attend either MIT or Caltech (admitted EA to both), he seems to be leaning towards MIT. He was in MIT FOR WISE in October and my wife and I came along with him because we have never been to Boston area and that was an opportunity for us to explore Boston, and see a little bit of MIT and Harvard. We even drove to Yale to just to see the campus.
My wife and I will be there in April, thanks for your insightful post, and please thank your daughter for a job well done. I am sure with her talent and education it will not be too long before she becomes very famous. My son also thank your daughter for an awesome poster, he is going to be at the CPW maybe he will see your daughter in April.

There are as many hidden messages in the poster as you’ll find in a brass rat. Good luck finding them. :-)

@firevwater – If you attend CPW, you can let her know yourself!
