Campus safety alert during pre-frosh weekend

Printout of email after the explanation:
The Daily Princetonian Newspaper was not allowed to web update about this during the Princeton Pre Frosh weekend, but what occurred this weekend was an inevitable result of the VERY little policing of the Princeton campus. Public Safety officers are notorious for shutting down parties on weekends before midnight, but on weekday nights and on weekends in areas where there are no parties, PSafe officers are nowhere to be found.
A close friend sprained his ankle walking home from the library on a wednesday night (sober, obviously). It was pretty bad bc he is an athlete and even he could not physically move from the ground. It took more than an hour before he saw A SOUL on the main walkway of campus, and even then it was not a PSafe officer but a friend. The point is, why is there no roaming of the campus by public safety officers at night making sure everything is all right?

Another example: Many Prox pads (the keyless entry system ensuring only students can access buildings) are broken or torn off for days until a student reports it. These "reports" are even in the Princeton Public Safety public logs. So, here is the frightening question....why didn't a PSafe officer even NOTICE a main safety feature missing for days? Had they not walked past the building?

When there was a gunman scare, most students I have spoken to agreed that we are NOT scared of a gunman on campus, or student violence, but rather the shadiness of campus at.

Best part of this letter is that they acknowledge that there was basically no patroling at night. Be careful of Princeton----it is of course very safe, but this isn't the point. The administration allows a level of incompetency in everything they do that is just ridiculous and stage MASS COVERUPS during pre-frosh weekend.

Here is the message received by students during pre frosh weekend. All incidents of this sort are reported to the daily princetonian web update.....not this one though:
The Department of Public Safety is alerting community members of an ongoing investigation concerning reported incidents of lewdness.

In separate incidents at approximately 2 and 2:39 a.m. on Saturday, April 18, 2009, two Princeton University female students reported a male was masturbating and exposed his genital area to them while they were walking alone across campus. The first incident took place as the victim was walking on McCosh Walk toward the University Store and the suspect was on the steps between Buyers and Witherspoon halls. The victim said she also saw the suspect earlier in the evening near 1879 Hall and the School of Architecture, where he was masturbating as he walked behind her. The second victim reported that she saw the suspect near the first entry of 1879 Hall, where he exposed himself. The victim said the suspect ran toward Washington Road toward Nassau Street. The suspect did not come into direct contact with either victim.

The suspect was described by the two female students as a Hispanic male, approximately 29 years of age, 6'2 in height, curly hair, wearing a blue and black fleece zip-up jacket, blue jeans and brown shoes.

The Department of Public Safety continues to investigate this incident, will increase foot patrols around the campus in the evening hours and asks that any community member who has relevant information contact the department by calling (609) 258-1000 or via a confidential tip line on our website: https://tipline.princeton.edu/.

To maintain the safety and security of the campus, the Department of Public Safety reminds all community members to follow the crime prevention tips listed on our website (Public Safety), including:

sort of freaky

Lol… should have applied to Princeton…

Campus Safety Alert

This notice is to advise you of an incident that concerns the University community.

Date: Sunday, April 19, 2009
Incident: Criminal Sexual Contact

The Department of Public Safety is alerting community members of an incident that took place at approximately 3: 20 a.m. Sunday, April 19, 2009, on the lawn between Witherspoon Hall and Alexander Hall (Alexander Beach).

A female Princeton University student reported that she was grabbed by a male suspect who reached under her clothes to touch her. The suspect had first approached the female student and attempted to speak with her, then grabbed her, preventing her from leaving after she attempted to walk away from him. The suspect released the victim and walked towards West College after another student witnessed the incident and intervened by attempting to pull the female student away.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, between 23 and 26 years of age, approximately 5’11", medium build, lean face with big eyes, with dark short-cropped hair, and a thin moustache. The suspect was wearing a light blue or gray button-down shirt and jeans. The clothing was described as loose or baggy fitting.

The Department of Public Safety continues to investigate this incident, will increase foot patrols around the campus in the evening hours and asks that any community member who has relevant information contact the department by calling (609) 258-1000 or via a confidential tip line on our website: <a href=“Microsoft Forms”>Microsoft Forms;

The assertion that the Prince was not allowed to report these events is not correct. The Prince is independent of the University. The Prince has a student editor-in-chief responsible for content, is overseen by an independent alumni board, and has its own endowment. There is no faculty advisor who must review or approve content.

By the time the incident occurred most of the pre-frosh had left campus so that does not appear to have been a motivation for not posting an article. My guess is that these events were simply not seen as being of sufficient import to warrant a Web alert. There will probably be a story about this in the Prince on Monday.

Overall, however, the campus is a very safe one. If I were walking around at 2:30 a.m., I’d much rather do it at Princeton than at many of its peers located in more urban settings.

yeah, i don’t know how the university could possibly tell the prince what to do-- since they ahve no control over it (the prince pays the university to use the space that they occupy in 48 UP even)

See comments on the prince website…they definitely slaves to the admins

To which comments do you refer? I am aware of no comments on the Prince website that support your allegation that the administration in any way censored the reporting of this or any other incident. Indeed, Prince editorials regularly fault the administration for perceived shortcomings. Are you confusing the Prince with the USG, which some students have commented upon in the Prince as being too close to the administration?

Princetongal

What are you talking about? My daughter spoke with a highly ranked member of the Prince staff, who said that nothing was censored.

they posted a story about it in the prince today. All of the events occured after 2 in the morning. While princeton is a very safe place, its generally not a fantastic idea to be walking home (drunk?) alone, at 3 in the morning as a female. The good thing about princeton is that everyone lives on campus, so its not very far out of your way to have a friend walk you home.

I agree with ec1234. If you can manage to get sexually assaulted at one of the safest universities in one of the safest towns in the world, then you are not taking commonsense precautions. Despite my brutal diction, I am not blaming the victim, whom I have nothing but sympathy for; I am simply saying that the university can only do so much without acting like a parent. Whatever happened to the philosophy of personal responsibility that you Americans are (in)famous for?

Princeton Gal: You have started and continued about 4 separate threads about this now. What next, asking ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, and CNN to run 24-hour non-stop coverage about it? You haven’t discovered the next Watergate, trust me. What you are describing probably happens almost every night in New Haven, Boston, NYC, and Philly. Chill out and get a life.

Incompetancy of Public Safety Revealed!
the incompetence of the Princeton Public Safety and Administration revealed. A delay in notifying POLICE! Strike Two…
From the Trenton Times:
The reports have prompted investigations by campus and borough police, as well as two email warnings to the student population. The university said the email warnings, which contained details of the incidents, had been sent on Saturday morning and Sunday morning.

But borough police said their investigation started later than that by campus police, as they were not notified of the reports until Sunday afternoon.

“It’s unclear at this time why there was a delay,” Lt. Nick Sutter said. “We’re playing catch-up right now.”

Princeton Gal has also found Jimmy Hoffa, Judge Crater, and the aliens from Area 51 all being hidden inside of Nassau Hall. Nefarious plot!!! Start ten more separate threads about it and alert Time, Newsweek, People, and the National Enquirer! This is big, I’m tellin’ ya, big!!

and yet they’re not all that incompetent, as they have found the guy and arrested him…

[Breaking News 5:59 p.m.: Arrest made in Alexander Beach incident of criminal sexual contact - The Daily Princetonian](http://www.dailyprincetonian.com/2009/04/21/23475/)

4th House, are you clas of 2013?
Because you sound like a brat. Please read the campus discussion that has been going about these issues that raises the exact same sentiment.
In the 2013 forum you told me to focus on Darfur instead of campus issues…let me tell you that if you want me focus on Darfur:

 1. Don’t come to Princeton—haven’t heard the word Darfur uttered in months
 2. One look at the Prince will show that Princeton has an active student community looking to better the university they love. This has nothing to do with saving the world, we want to save the school we love.

Also, this is not directed at Malkiel, Tighlman, etc., but rather their advisory committees that are supposed to be taking care of this for them

I think – in fact, I know – that a large portion of your classmates would take great offence at your having characterized Princetonians as inward-looking and unworldly.

You must major in mathematics or some other esoteric discipline that removes you from the ways of the world. But don’t transpose your acquired insularity onto your fellow students.

What is the point? Aren’t you all members of this site to talk about the specifics of Princeton University?
I didn’t think this was a save darfur forum, I thought it was a site called “College Confidential.”
And I am an English major

Princeton Gal, I simply cannot believe the bandwidth and hysteria you are giving to this “massive conspiracy of criminal-level incompetence” as you appear to be describing it. You have possibly the safest campus in the nation, maybe the world. And yet you are bloviating in such a way as to scare off anyone from attending your school. Furthermore, despite this “horrendous incompetence and cover-up,” they already caught this petty nuisance of a perpetrator. On 90% of the other campuses in this nation, that guy probably would have never been caught.

And like Mustafah78, I am sorry you feel that not one single person at Princeton cares about anything larger or more all-encompassing than on-campus twisted ankles. I don’t know; maybe only you feel that way. If so, I am sorry to hear that. It seems Princeton has an awful lot of organizations dedicated to national and international humanitarian issues. You should try to join one.

Finally, if brat infers that I have wit, perspective, and am not afraid to speak my mind, then thank-you. Although, on the other hand, the way you wrote it (maybe you don’t write well; I don’t know) you make it sound like you have decided that everyone in the class of 2013 is a brat. If so … wow. That is, like, so … bigoted and ignorant? Should the university have simply closed down once they admitted you?

I’d like to end this flame war. You already started four entire threads all on the same subject. The guy has been caught. I’m sure other posters want to talk about something else.

Yeah, sure. But we’re here to talk about relevant specifics, information that will help us successfully apply to Princeton or decide whether the university is the right fit for us. This alleged sexual assault is not noteworthy to anyone except you, it seems. And if it is noteworthy to some prospective students, it’s not four-hysterical-threads noteworthy.

The only use of this thread, in my opinion, is to demonstrate to prospective Princetonians that it’s easy to become totally encapsulated by the “Orange Bubble” if you’re not too careful.
