I have visited Ball Sate on several occasions, and have been on campus at night for shows, etc, and I’m very surprised it would be on this list. As a parent one of my first questions is always about safety, and I know they have phones where you can get immediate assistance from campus police. The campus is fairly compact, well lit, and I will have no qualms in sending my D there if she chooses that as her option.

I read that also. I suppose it depends on how many rapes, robberies, etc. are reported. Have not removed form the list. It is best to visit the campus
and get a feel for its safety yourself. It is a great program.

I read about some shootings there a while back but that’s not why I didn’t apply. And UCLA is on this list so, yeah, that’s pretty some good company.

This suprises me also. Never had a scary moment there, nor has my student or his friends in three years on campus. It is in a very non-urban area in the middle of Indiana. Just sayin…

When we did campus tour they said the blue light emergency system had not been utilized since installation and that stolen property can be an issue like all college campuses but physical safety was not an issue. We messaged two current junior female MT’s at the school and both said they have never felt unsafe on campus or off or had any issues…

My d is a sophomore at Ball State. An interesting thing she shared with me is that the Ball State University Police continue their beats off campus by a fairly large distance. Muncie City Police are out there, too, but BSU Police take care of the area off campus, so anything that happens in their territory, whether it involves students or not, gets placed in their reports. By contrast (and this is just one other school we know), University of Cincinnati (also on the list, I believe) has their University Police force stop at the edge of campus – it something happens across the street, it’s Cincinnati Police jurisdiction.

Many BSU students choose to live off campus in their upper years, as well as shop The Village, live in the Greek houses or other near-campus activities. I am glad that the BSU Police force is able to keep an eye on them, even off campus. But my d feels that the numbers are a little inflated by comparison of campuses where “police incidents” are only directly on campus. BSU Police are really taking care of the campus and community.

She has not felt unsafe there, and as parents, we have also found the BSU campus and nearby neighborhood to be a place we are comfortable with our daughter exploring. Just use common sense anywhere – it’s our imperfect world, and there are no pure bubbles to keep our kids in!

Hello everyone,
My name is Kyler and I am a sophomore MTO major.
I am so surprised that this University is on such a list as this.
Personally, I believe crime happens anywhere you go.
I can say that I have lived on campus for one semester, but I’ve lived off campus for a year and a half by myself.
I live alone in my own apartment nearly 10 minutes walking distance from campus, in the village, and have always felt safe during the commute.
BSU police are literally around EVERY corner and it’s true that their jurisdiction is not only within the campus line.
They are protecting those on campus and those living off campus in a larger radius than most colleges.
Something that I have found very helpful is the fact that the university has it’s own emergency alert system that emails and text messages students to update them in case of various incidents around the campus.
Given recent events and the way the world is changing, BSU does not take any alert to violence lightly.
We take our campus safety very seriously.

Hi there,
I’m Taylor, a sophomore Theatre Education major, and I completely agree with Kyler.
Personally, I have always felt safe at any time of day. I live in a residence hall on campus, and the buildings and areas outside have felt secure for the entirety of my time here. Ball State University takes care of their students, and that is exemplified by the measures taken to ensure safety on campus.
