@flutterfly_28 I guess stranger things have happened? At least, I heard he was a senior transfer. You never know someone’s unique circumstances.

But I think the whole thing is a sad misunderstanding or something…I guess we can’t ask him his motive now…

He could have served in the military? Don’t know, just guessing. He was obviously a smart guy for getting into Haas…it’s quite an accomplishment. My thoughts are with his family and friends and the officer.

WarnMe was really slow. If this were multiple gunmen on campus, warnme would’ve been useless. I recall someone near me getting a phone call around 2:40-:45 and at that time, there were only 1-3 posts on twitter (only 1 photo of the Haas evacuation). In the next 5-10 minutes, a bunch of messages hit twitter. Probably 5-10 minutes after the burst of Twitter activity, the first warnme message came out.

Lesson: get your friends to text/call you in case the **** hits the fan

@flutterfly: It’s not that uncommon to have older undergraduate students. I have a few people in their late 20’s in most of my classes and a person who is in her late 40’s/early 50’s.

And I agree with webhappy, warnme was hella slow. I trust twitter way more than warnme now.

You know what’s worse? I read a news article that found a video/blog or something where he said he wanted to start his life over again since he screwed up before and dropped out :(

That was apparently why he went back to community college and transfered btw

Wow, really? That’s sad…but there’s still the huge question of why he had a gun in the first place, and why he apparently brandished it at the Haas lab. Was it just a weird misunderstanding, was it maybe related to Occupy Cal (probably not…?), or was his plan to actually use it on the students?
It’s gonna be hard to find out now…when the friggin police killed him…

It was in no way related to occupy cal. As Ixfd64 said earlier this is sounding more and more like “suicide-by-cop.” Most reports I’ve heard say that the suspect pulled out his gun after they approached him and then pointed it at the officers. If he was a former security guard then he knew what was going to happen next.

I think anyone would know what would happen next.

Yeah…that does seem like the most plausible reason at this point…I guess he did attempt suicide twice before too…but still…we’ll never really know now :/
