On Emory's supplement, they ask for demonstrated interest, and one of the things is campus visit. I live only a couple of hours from the school, and I've been there multiple times to see friends/etc. But, I've never actually conducted a formal visit with the school. So is it considered lying on your app to say you've visited?

No. You have visited. Why would that be lying?

I don't know if they'd check records , because on the application they ask for a specific date of visit, so I'm thinking they mean a formal visit

So on the application, you write the dates you visited, and if there's space, you write: "Visiting current students." or some such.

I'm serious; I'm not playing semantics; you have in fact visited, and because of that you have a feel for the campus.

Besides, I think they have better things to do than cross-check their attendance records with your application.

When you take a formal tour of the school, they ask you to fill out info cards.
These cards are put in your file. If you assert that you visited the school and put a date down and they, by chance, do check your file and don't find an info card from that date,.......

But he didn't. So all he has to do is put the date and like VH said, add a note that he was visiting students there, not going on a campus tour.
