S2 and I are visiting from the east coast and our only opportunity to see Marquette is on Saturday when no formal admission sessions or tours are scheduled. Any suggestions for making the most of our visit? So far we've perused the web site and printed out a campus map. Any other ideas?

I suggest you phone admissions to see if there’s ANYTHING they can arrange, even if it’s a walking tour with a student guide. My limited experience with them shows them to be quite flexible and happy to work with prospects.

Otherwise, it’s you and her walking the campus and NOT seeing a dorm or talking to someone in admissions or in the academic dept of her interest or … Clearly it’s your only option but it’s tough to imagine getting an awful lot out of it.

Also, you might see if there are alumni of her HS at Marquette. Maybe you could hook up with one of them?

Sorry – S2 suggests a boy offspring, not a girl, doesn’t it? S for Son, perhaps!?

Yikes!

Try to call a couple of weeks ahead of time to see if you can meet with a member of your prospective department. We went last summer and got a tour, as well as a meeting with an engineering department rep. There are some weekend open houses coming up on September 13th and October 11th. We just got a letter today. Wish we could go!

Thanks for the suggestions. We’re only here in WI for two days and the main reason for the visit was admission sessions and tour at University of Wisconsin Madison. Marquette was a last minute addition. S downloaded an iPod tour, so if we can’t “drop-in” tomorrow and connect with a tour, that’ll have to do. It’s more of a safety school, so a real visit may have to wait until acceptances are in next spring.

Did our own walking tour and then drove around Milwaukee. Liked Marquette; loved Milwaukee. S2 will likely apply and if it ends up near the top of the acceptance list, we’ll come back, likely for one of the scholarship weekends. Good luck to all!

Archiemom, so glad you got to see the school and the surrounding area. Always good to put a face to a name, so to speak. Good luck to you as well!

things to consider MU vs UW… depending on the major you might not get into the program of your choice versus guaranteed placement at MU. Had two friends kids who couldn’t get into their engineering and nursing programs.
Milwaukee is a great mid sized city I think Not too big and not too small. Lots to do.

+1, keymom. UW was my son’s far and away fave (and mine too, given reciprocity with MN) until the engr college told us that only 30 of 90 engineering students applying for biomedical could be accepted. The other 60 float around for a semester or two and hope to get in. Some eventually bail out of engineering into a straight-up science program.

Just what you want as a 2nd semester sophomore.
