Campus Visits

Does CMU look at your interest in the school?? Meaning, if I didn't visit, do I have a worse off chance of acceptance compared to someone who did?

Yes, CMU does take interest into account, and I believe a visit can possibly help your chances. (The CollegeBoard database shows which factors are most important for admission into various colleges.) However, it’s not essential–I didn’t visit, and I was accepted. They do consider interest, but it’s just one factor in your application.

They do have a computerized system that “knows” whether or not you visited campus (and how many times, and on what dates). It can be a benefit if your app is on the fence. However, not having visited probably doesn’t count against you, to my knowledge.

What if you didn’t sign up officially for a visit, but still visited the campus and was allowed to go on a tour? I did this because we were just passing through, but I wrote a little about visiting in my essay. My name wouldn’t show up in their system, and I don’t want the admissions people to think I lied about visiting…

You should’ve gotten a little name tag when you went into the front office for your tour which had your name on it. Did you do so? if so, then you’ll be in the system - but if not, that’s okay too. Having been a tour guide before I know there are usually a few students/parents who drop in without signing up, and that’s fine. No one will accuse you of having lied about your visit.

Don’t worry about it-- 25-28% of each entering class are students from abroad-- they don’t visit!

Seriously- a visit shows interest, but CMU like any school doesn’t consider it against you if you are more than a car ride away.

If you live within a day’s drive and it’s not a significant expense, there may be a ? as to how can you really know CMU is for you if you never visited.
I guess that really is a question you should ask yourself. If you can visit- you should.
You know the curriculum-- but the “fit” of a campus can not be felt without a visit. It is perfectly acceptable and expected that you may not visit until after an acceptance. There are “accepted student” days and programs at CMU and several school throughout April. Hope you will be able to attend!

Best of luck

Hmm, thanks for all of your advice. I think I will try to schedule one. Should I schedule it before any specific date, so my visit will be noticed while they review my application?

Do they also count interest for the school of computer science, or is it too competitive to care?

Great, I didn’t visit Carnegie mellon but my dad did haha (as part of a guidance counselor tour). I live near nyc though so i don’t think it will hurt me too much
