USC - Went there for grad school. Crowded, cramped, opulent, energetic, ridiculous school spirit. The area surrounding the school isn’t the kind of neighborhood you’d find around lots of other big schools, in that it’s not really geared towards students. That’s been changing over the past few years, but there aren’t a lot of cheap, divey places for students to eat, drink or shop right off campus. Downtown LA is only about a mile and a half away, though.
Yale - Only visited once. Probably my favorite college campus. If I had to go to school on the East Coast, this is where I’d go. (If they let me in.) Everybody I’ve met who went to Yale has been interesting.
Columbia - I used to live in NYC, so was on campus occasionally. Kind of like USC, in that they’re both cramped, walled-in campuses right in the middle of a big city. The building architectures are different. Columbia has lots of old, Greek and Roman style buildings. USC has lots of new, red brick buildings.
I’ve been on a few other campuses mentioned, but that was either so long ago, or I was on campus for such a short time, that whatever I say is probably meaningless. (Although I will say that MIT may be one of the ugliest campuses I’ve ever been on. It’s like an industrial park.)
I live adjacent to Northwestern. Beautiful location, great town, amazing music and theater scene. Students seem engaged and hard working. Not a lot of school spirit when it comes to sports (away team fans outnumber home fans at most football games). They are on a quarter system and tout the ease of double majoring.
