When people say USC CAMPUS do they mean that the entire area is actually enclosed and guarded [and i would think, no crimes or at least, less], as opposed to "off campus" where the crimes happen??

The USC campus is bounded by Jefferson on the North, Figueroa on the East, Exposition on the South, and Vermont on the West.

The only real crimes that happen on campus are property crimes. There are gates and fences surrounding the entire campus.

Don't worry, most of the property crime on campus is caused by DPS' mass bike confiscationage.

The campus is technically gated, but the exposition enterence on the "Trojan Walk" with the flagpoles is always open, so you can always come and go. And as for the area, USC owns almost all of it.

why do i hear people calling the area outside usc "bloods territory" sounds intimidating lol

I have never seen a single gang member/incident around here. DPS owns this place

haha alright

I read a dissertation by a Ph.D. candidate in geography who runs the website www.streetgangs.com that did a lot of research on African American gangs in the Los Angeles area. I saw one map in there that placed Blood territory right next to USC (west of campus). Territories may have changed since then (1999), and some of the author's own [pictures/url on his website show different territories, but it's a real presence in Los Angeles.

But please don't get the wrong idea; gangs are usually respectful of the university and don't get involved in anything near campus. Even in the 1992 riots, the university was hardly scathed even though some strip malls right across the street on Vermont were razed. That was then...security is even better now and there is less to be worried about if you currently go to USC.

Yea, my impression is that the people in the surrounding area generally have positive feelings toward USC and USC students, seeing that we provide a lot of business for establishments in the area.

i know it wasnt ur intention but the trojan article just got me more scared! lol assuming you guys [anyone of the above who replied thanks btw] are USC students, tell me, have YOU ever witnessed/ heard of gang related crimes?! i really need to know !!

ylhs, if you are honestly this worried, you probably shouldn't go to college in any city what-so-ever. You could always just go to school in a very rural area, and not have to think about crime.

I'm not trying to be mean, but seriously there are other more imporatant factors you need to focus your college decision on.

I've personally never seen or heard of gang-related crimes on campus.

All I can say, anecdotally, is that we are what my daughter would probably say are overprotective parents (grin), who are very aware of gang issues (her uncle is in So. CA law enforcement, and I work proofreading L.A. Co. criminal trial transcripts which are usually about gang members) -- and we have no problems whatsoever with our daughter being on the USC campus. She goes to the movies and the Denny's in University Village, goes to basketball at the Galen Center, goes to football in the Coliseum...it's been fine. No safety issues have come up whatsoever in her first semester. We had some concerns before she went but learned that DPS is very proactive (some would say overly so, when it comes to bikes!) and have found that what we were told about campus safety before she attended has proven to be true.

LOL bicoastal- i live in NEW YORK CITY! but despite what people say, its not dangerous AT ALL [there may be some exceptions; harlem, flatbush at night] but otherwise, no big crimes whatsoever. thats why i'm asking about USC to see if the same applies. i know there are other important factors i think i'm focusing on crime so much cause im trying to find reasons NOT to go to usc.. i cant decide =( my school only lets you apply to 5 schools thats why i'm narrowing my list down but i do REALLY like usc. yeah i'm talking way too much. bye. protokurios- ok thanks.

thanks pbk mom

Yeah the only crime I really see around the area is DPS stealing peoples bikes and making them pay 20 dollars to get it back...

And small robberies. I think that's about it.

Don't walk alone at night and you should be fine.

As for robberies, If you read the DPS crime reports, if you look big and scary or just run, nothing bad happens usually

USC is an incredibly safe campus. I've also held the opinion for a long time now that Los Angeles, as a city, is much safer than people realize. In per capita terms, the odds of anything violent happening to you are quite low.

In fact, violent crime in LA is much lower now than it was 30 years ago, if my figures are still current.

same with nyc its much safer than what most think, i just wanted to understand if area around usc was like tht too cause i dont think i will be visiting. thanks everyone!

I have had no problems with the area or LA in general....And I am a 5'3", 110lb girl who rides LA metro to and from Hollywood at odd hours of the night. No one has bugged me, and I feel tremendously safe on the campus.
