I took 2 years of honors english and 1 year of APLit (scored 3 on the exam). I also self-studied APLang (Scored 3). So WILL this count as FOUR YEARS HS English as required for admission by many colleges? My intention is to NOT take an english class this year, my senior year. Bad idea, or good-to-go?

Does your school require 4 years of English for graduation? Even if it does not, it is not a terribly good idea to forgo a 4th year of English

You should take English and Math for all 4 years of high school.

Yes, @skieurope, my school does require 4 years of English, but it permits self-study and passing (with a 3) of APLit / APLang to count as 1 year. I’m no slacker - (#2 in my class) - I just have a passion for math and science, and wish to make more room in my schedule for those courses if possible.

If your HS requires 4 years of credit and you receive it then it’s not a problem.

It may depend on the colleges you are targeting. The California publics do explicitly allow AP English scores to satisfy the subject requirement in lieu of high school English courses. But other schools may not. <a href=“University of California Counselors”>University of California Counselors;

Some schools may consider AP English language and AP English literature to be partial duplication for various purposes (admission, credit, or placement).

Take an English class senior year.

I would read the admission pages of each college you are thinking of very carefully. And while it may be technically okay for some, it isn’t going to put you in a strong position, imo it is just too key of a core, there is no single class that I can think of that would be more important.

All I can say is this is very risky. I am sure some colleges would not like it. Not every school look at your AP scores even if you submitted them.

Thanks, everyone. English is the devil - but it looks like I need to rethink my senior courses. I’m really glad I asked about this before it was too late!
