Can a Div 2 athlete transfer to a Div 3 college? What restrictions?

If a Div2 athlete on full scholarship is recruited to play at a “meet full need”, Div 3 college, are they allowed to transfer and get the need-based aid they’ve been awarded? Are they allowed to play or must they “sit out” their first year after the transfer?
Are there restrictions to that?

You can always transfer to a D3 school because there is no athletic scholarship involved. My daughter was recruited and signed at a D2 school. Many D3 schools continued to call her and some were so bold as to say the NLI didn’t matter, she could still go to the D3 school and play. No honor among thieves.

@twoinanddone – Some might say that your metaphor is unfair to thieves.

Thank you.
But still a coach won’t contact another player once she’s started on the team or is that NCAA requirement ignored ?

I’d say most coaches won’t contact a player once the school year has started, mostly because they don’t have time and that’s no longer their recruiting focus group. If the player contacts the coach, then the NCAA rules about contact kick in (different for transfers than high school students).

If this player was recruited by the D3 coach before, they may have kept in contact and the coach left the door open. It’s worth looking into if the student wants to transfer. My daughter has several transfer students on her team, but I think the students were already accepted into the school and then talked to the coach about playing. Our coach is happy to have them, but she wouldn’t contact a prior recruit to see if that student was interested in transferring. Could she? I think so, but she wouldn’t do that because she’s focused on the high schoolers, not other college players.
