Can a huge coincidence help me get into my dream school?

So my dream school happens to be Colorado college, and right now my stats are almost in line with there averages (1970 sat, 3.74 Gpa, soon to be eagle scout, study abroad and nhs officer).

Ill keep my bizzare story short. While in a remote village in Austria on my exchange, my host brothers grandparent kept telling me of their one great friend in America. They said he was the former president of some college in the us, and that college happemed to be Colorado college. Me and my host brother are planning on meeting his family when we go to my house (which happens to be very close to my house). His grandparents asked me if it would help if they got a letter of recommendation from him.

My question is..would it help in admission? I'm not even sure if he will be there when we visit next month, yet I feel if I should tell my host parents if they should try to contact him, or if it wouldn't really help anyone.

Thanks for the help!

Well, really anything that helps you stand out from the competition will help. In my opinion I dont think it could possibly hurt.

I would say it wouldn’t help unless he really knows you. Otherwise they will know that he just did it as a favor

Will his rec say something like “I hear this young man is a very nice fellow”? In your opinion would that help?

I think the general consensus here is, take the time to get to know him well, get him to write a recommendation letter for you, but read it over before you send it to the college. You never know what it might say xD!!

^That’s not a correct summation of the advice given Cokelly. Fawning over the guy, visiting elderly grandparents in a remote Austrian village, in order to get a rec letter.

That’s no recipe for success. The grandparents want to be nice – but that’s just not how it works.

I haven’t weighed in on this question before, but I’d have to agree that the consensus is that a letter from this former president of the college won’t be particularly helpful because the man is a virtual stranger, and because he can’t say anything about your ability to succeed in college.

And the consensus is right.

Well, I would look at it from a different light; how could it hurt? At the verry least youll end up meeting an important part of the schools history, and have a good story.
