Can a letter of recommendation come from my sophomore year teacher?

I had a great global history teacher in 10th grade. I participated and did well in the class. Additionally, she substituted for my US history teacher when I was a junior for a while because my regular teacher had a baby. Would it be okay if she wrote a letter of rec for me, if she included that she subbed for a significant amount of time.
All advice is much appreciated!

I don’t think it’s a good idea. Admissions will wonder why you can’t get a junior or senior year teacher.

@uskoolfish thank you!

If you feel that this is truly your best rec letter writer, go with it – esp since she did instruct you in 11th grade.

I’m confused now…

If you feel this is the teacher that knows you best then go with it. Ask her to include in the recommendation that she had you for part of junior year as well as sophomore year. My D had a sophomore year teacher write one of her two teacher recommendations (the teacher was her advisor in grades 10-12 in a school based program, but only taught her in the classroom sophomore year) and it was fine.

The recommendation form itself asks,“How long have you known this student and in what context?” So it’s easy to explain teaching you in 10th and part of 11th.

Agree with above. If this will be the best rec, then ask for it so that you can put your best foot forward.

Thanks everyone!

It’s totally fine! My son had a weird situation where a bunch of his teachers quit, retired, got very ill, had a baby, etc. He was forced to use a Freshman year teacher but his other rec was a math teacher who had him for 3 years. He had to have a LA or SS teacher and they were all gone but his Freshman one (but he did stay in contact with her and was in a club she sponsored). It’s best to use a recent one but I’m sure schools realize there can be reasons why that doesn’t work out.
