I am a 23 year old United States sailor and will be 25 by the end of my enlistment. Due to a troubled childhood I dropped out of high school, attained a GED and was living on my own until I joined the military. I've turned my life around and I really want to go to a top computer engineering school, either Georgia Tech in my hometown or any challenging school near silicon valley. MIT would be nice but I feel like that is just a dream, but maybe for grad school!

The obvious question is, 'is this achievable by directly applying to these schools?' I plan on spending the next year preparing for the SAT, SAT 2, and ACT. Would I be waisting my time? I plan to write these schools individually but maybe someone here may help as well. What else would better help my chances as my high school grades are a tragic failure?

Also my job in the navy has qualified me for a few college credits (I'm a computer/radio tech). I hold a top secret computer clearance and finished my navy school at the top of my class with 2 computer certifications. I will be participating in an open source software engineering project but my time is very limited as I constantly work 18 hour days with weeks away from civilization or the internet at times.

Any direction would help.

Respectfully,
Sailerb
