I know colleges like essays on hardships, family issues, deaths, and how you overcame them. Yet, I was wondering if a hardship can be so limiting that it hurts you. I was gonna write my essay on my visual impairment, but I'm afraid some colleges would think I'm too close to blindness to be productive (even though its illegal to think so). Should I be worried about it (I have really bad eyesight, but I certainly am not blind. I'm just above the legal eyesight required to drive)?

I wouldn’t say colleges like hardships. It’s just that it can be more emotionally attaching, but it depends on how it is written. If you can capture the reader’s sympathy, then yes, write about your hardship.

Just curious, how did your impairment happen? Accident or just born with it?

accident, but the damage was more intense for me due to genetics

I think that if you write it well, and show that it doesn’t prevent you from doing things, it would be a great essay! Colleges even accept people who are completely blind! I think it would show your courage to keep going— something I’d be too afraid to do. :)
