I finally found my old report cards from 9th and 10th grades and now am anxious to calculate my GPA for those years. My only problem is that the report cards were filled with useless required classes like PE, Health and Basic Computing. I would love it if those weren't factored into my GPA, but since I transferred from a public HS in NY to a private HS in NC I can't ask my NY GS what she colleges will count when factoring a GPA!

Can any of you help me out?

These are my classes and final averages for 9th and 10th grade. All grades are based on the standard 10 pt 100 scale. And even though I was taking honors and AP courses, as far as I know none were weighted!! :(

9th GRADE
PE (89%)
English 9 Enriched (90%)
French 2 (93%)
Earth Science (90%)
Math 1B (Half year- 84%)
Math 3A (Half year-87%)
Health (Half year-82%)
Basic Computing (Half-year-82%)
Global 9 Enriched (96%)

10th GRADE
AP European History (95%)
Designing/Drawing for Production (94%)
Math B (82%)
Chemistry (80%)
PE (92%)
French 3 (89%)
English 10 Enriched (91%)

Do PE, Designing/Drawing for Production, Health and Basic Computing factor into the GPA that colleges look at? What classes would and would not be included in factoring the GPA?

And one last thing- How unfair is this grading system? AP and Enriched courses aren't weighted at all, so they factor into your school GPA (ie class rank) the same way that electives do!

I got 3.7 for 10th grade (I'm really not sure)...because some of your 9th grade classes are half-year, I wasn't sure how to compute it. I think to do that you'd need the percentages for each semester. Then calculate the GPAs for each semester and average those.

I got ~3.56 for 9th grade? I averaged in your two math classes as if they were seperate classes (again, not sure how to do that haha), but if that works you'd have a cum gpa of 3.633 ;) I also didn't factor in PE, Health, and Global (?), because schools usually only use academic classes for your GPA (atleast, mine does?)

If that doesn't work, you could always try seeing your GC!

Really, you have to ask your school. Every county or school does GPA calculations differently. For example, some does it on a 5 point scale and others does it in a 4 point scale. Also, what numeric value an A or B equals to is different. And as far as I know, you don't get to choose what classes get factored in your GPA. Which classes are and aren't also depends on your school.

Which classes and grades colleges look at also differ. You should call up prospective colleges and ask.

Thanks for all the info everyone. I would love to ask my GC, but I don't go to the same school anymore and I'm not sure if my new GC would know what classes counted. And that would also require me to wait a few weeks until school starts again (something that I don't even want to think about right now!).

The global class was pretty much the required history class for us-Global History. Health was an elective, but it was a required elective if that makes any sense. It was a typical class however...ie tests HW and that sort of thing.

You should still ask your new guidance counselor. For all you know, your new school might convert classes and gradings to fit that of the school's. And if your new counselor has questions, I would assume that s/he has the ability to contact your old school about it.

I personally think that if the class appears on your transcript, then it counts, and all colleges are going to see it.
