Can bad writers make good Essays?

Even if you are generally a bad writer, is it very possible to craft excellent college essays? I got an 8 on my ACT essay, I've applied to a couple positions but have been turned down likely due to my essay, and I'm not a straight A English student. What does this probably mean for my essays?

Only you know. If you just make it personal and write it with passion, it can be amazing.

You don’t necessarily have to be a good writer to craft an excellent college essay. In fact, admissions officers often don’t like essays that sound too formal or use too much difficult vocab. You just have to write in an informal/conversation tone and be able to convey the significance of whatever your writing about. Also, make sure you relate the essay back to YOU so the admissions officers can get a better idea of the kind of person you are from your essay.

I agree with Engineerjw and GoldOwl, but don’t forget to find editors! Editors are your friends, and while you don’t have to use every suggestion they offer, it’s great to have someone else read your essay (even if they’re just proofreading for grammar).

Yes, but you’ll have to work really hard and do a good job telling a story.

If you do, you will probably feel as though you have grown as a writer by the end of the process.

As LikeALeon said, having an editor that you trust would probably help you a lot if you are worried about your writing. If you cannot find one here, or through your personal network, it is possible to find them online for a fee. I am actually affiliated with one such essay editing company (called [Gurufi](http://■■■■■■■■■■)), but there are plenty of reputable people out there.

One thing to note is that screwing up your ACT essay does not make you a bad writer. It simply means that you weren’t able to structure your thoughts and pump out a great quick semi-coherent essay. Crafting a personal statement is a completely different problem that you will be able to do if you work at it hard enough.

^ ok thanks, don’t worry I can have someone read my essay

An 8 on the ACT essay is not terrible. Most of my friends got 8s, including those who got fives on the AP Language exam.

The ACT essay is in no way an indicator of writing ability. The prompts are boring, there’s a time limit, and they don’t really grade it on how interesting it is.

True, however I also got an 8 on the SAT essay so I see a consistent problem in my writing ability.

The SAT essay is an excellent writing indicator, if you got an 8 on it you should be worried about your college essays.

^Haha! I hope you are being sarcastic!

SAT essays are no way like a colleges essay! NOT EVEN CLOSE!

SAT essays are ones where you chose a side and the college essay are the ones where you show almost all your sides!

Comparing SAT, or for that matter ACT, essay to college essays is like comparing Stephanie Meyer(LOATHE HER :p) TO Ayn Rand!

hhaha ok thanks

ripemango: Being a bad writer does not mean that you shall forever remain thus! You will learn and improve when you start writing creatively on a regular basis…for now just start writing drafts for your college essays and you will improve with every draft!

If you are bad in writing then you must be good in something…You can be a good writer even by writing ‘badly’ about what you are good at and you will have a good essay!

Just don’t be so blunt as to write an ‘I AM AWESOME’ essay…be humble, interesting and tell the reader why you are good at what you are good at! Passion will ensue if you start writing on something that you love!
