Yeah, I was wondering about this earlier.

we can, but only a certain amount of credits or classes...i don't know which or how many, but i do we can :)

i'd love to take a class just to see

Ah, awesome. Do you know where I could find out how many credits? I'm wondering because Brown is my dream school, but I'm really interested in architecture and design, and I assume that RISD would have some offerings there that I couldn't get from Brown.

someone told me you can only take up to 3 classes. boo :(

you can take four classes at RISD throughout your time at Brown. however its really hard to do it because of the scheduling conflicts-risd classes are seven hours long, so it takes up the whole day, which is easier to fit into a schedule as an upperclassman. but its doable, i think the average number of kids who do it is 200 a year

looks around I know I'm going to sound ignorant and stupid, but what is RISD?

Rhode Island School of Design, its one of the most prestigious art schools in the country. its right down the street from Brown

7 hour classes?! That is so intense.
And RISD students get priority so it's hard to get some of the classes you want there.

I got my first marking period B in art. I was in 6th grade, and the teacher told me I had no talent at all. It was a scarring experience. :(

this is a great site with lots of info about Brown & RISD collaborations, including cross-registration and special projects

http://risd.brown.edu

i wonder if RISD students are just as eager to take classes at Brown as Brownies are anxious to take classes at RISD

i think so. it more typical to see RISD students in humanities courses and language classes, but you never know. i know one former RISD student who took Brown's famous neuro 1 course and thought it was so cool that she tranferred to Brown. she's now double concentrating in visual art and neuroscience :)

she must ROCK. I want to do art and neuroscience. But unfortuneatley my art is ceramics, which is only offered at RISD. Thus, my access will be limited

Hey fids: my brother's an architecture major at brown, and I think he was able to take a class at RISD. Either that, or he tried and didn't get to. I'm not sure. But he's really happy with his architectural experience, and is doing an architecture study abroad program. Actually, I lied, he's a math/architecture double concentrator.

I took photography at RISD. It was not a 7 hour class, just a normal class; I don't know where that info comes from... I recall some "crits" (criticisms?) my RISD friends endured required lengthy preparations, and they worked REALLY hard.

It is a bit difficult to schedule RISD classes because the smester breaks, vacations, etc are different between the two schools. However, if you want to do it you can. Obviously garden variety studio art is available at Brown. Specialty classes at RISD are way more diverse (industrial design, graphics, etc), but of course they do have prerequisites. I doubt many Brown students take more than 4-5 RISD classes, and most more like 1-2.

The less obvious but more tangible advantage of RISD being nearby is having a big group of artistic kids in the vicinity... Brown + RISD makes for a nice balance of left & right brains in the collegaite population on the hill. Some of my dearest friends from my Brown days are RISD students whom I met working as a waitress, living off campus in a 'RISD'-populated apt building, etc.

IMHO RISD is a big plus, whether or not you ever take a RISD class.

o__O' question from an ignorant and curious outsider:

do you have to pay extra for cross registering between two schools?? xD''

This is for the OP who is interested in taking RISD courses as an architectural studies major at Brown. My daughter is an architectural studiess major at Brown and has taken two RISD courses in architecture so far. I believe you may take four. Yes, it is tricky to schedule and yes, these courses are like a six hour block and the semester dates do not coincide exactly but it can be done. No, it doesn't cost extra to cross register.

Rabo, where is your bro studying arch abroad? My D just did that last semester through Syracuse's Program in Florence (for architecture). I wonder if your brother knows my daughter, though this year, they are not on campus at the same time. When he returns, tell him my D is the Departmental Undergraduate Group Leader for Architectural Studies.

Hey soozie, this thread is pretty old! My brother went on the florence program too...2 years ago though! Right now though he's working for an architecture firm outside of Providence.

Rabo, yikes, I didn't notice how OLD this thread was. I just saw it as a post on the current page and thought it was current.

Your brother must have graduated then? LOL
Very happy to hear that he is working in a firm.
I forgot he also did the Florence program.
Perhaps my daughter already knows him, I am not sure.
She is currently applying to get an architecture internship this summer. She is currently a junior.

ice: no, you don't have to pay extra. You just take it in substitute of one of your brown classes.
