I know there’s a dual Brown/RISD program, but I’m not interested in it because apparently one switches between the two schools for campus living, and I think that’s detrimental to feeling a part of a particular campus.

Nevertheless I’m still interested in taking a few art classes despite not planning on majoring in art. Do you know if it’s possible to enroll in classes at RISD and still receive course credits for them? (For example, at Harvard you can take MIT classes, and at MIT you can take Harvard classes.)

Google “risd brown cross registration”

Problem solved.

I’ll add a caveat to wolfmanjack’s post: scheduling is difficult for RISD classes when you go to Brown - some classes are at inconvenient times, and some are 8 hours long (true story). But it’s definitely done, and I know people who do it.

My daughter is a senior at Brown and is currently taking a class at RISD. It was not really that difficult to do. The only real problem is that the schools’ schedules are different. Brown starts a couple of weeks earlier than RISD in both semesters, and ends earlier. So if you want to take 4 classes at Brown (a normal full load, although many people do take 5), you might have to drop one in order to fit the RISD course in. If you don’t get into the RISD course, however, you would have to keep the Brown course. So it can be tricky. The course that my daughter is taking meets only on Fridays from 1-6. Her Brown courses are on Tuesdays and Thursdays. She is able to do this mostly, I think, because she’s an upperclassman. She felt it was complicated in her earlier years. But she also didn’t feel the need to go outside of the Brown art department. The course she is taking at RISD is a pretty specialized graduate course and was not offered at all at Brown.
