Can College Coaches assist with pulling an athlete off of a waitlist and gaining admission?

Question says it all. To be clear, I’m talking about RD waitlist, not being deferred in EA/ED

I would say it depends on the school and depends on whether the coach has exhausted whatever he gets for picks. Some schools they can probably get you admitted in August even if you are not on the waitlist, others this would be a non-starter. Even if we knew the sport and the school you might not get much help here. But it definitely doesn’t hurt to ask. What do you have to lose?

Assuming you’re a runner, by your name. My S is a runner. The coach told him he had the most pull with ED1, much less with ED2 and RD, so I would imagine he has even less pull with the WL. But I agree it can’t hurt to ask, and it likely varies between schools.

How would you be admitted in august?

@eastcoast101 was this a D1 or D3 school? That would potentially make a huge difference.

D3. Agree that would make a difference.

I have heard of this happening at a Patriot League school. I don’t think it is the usual approach to athletic recruiting, and thus probably doesn’t happen all that much. On the other hand, nothing ventured nothing gained. I would reach out to the coach and admissions office and give it a shot. It can’t hurt.

August is unusual, but I had a friend’s son literally get recruited a week before classes started a couple years ago. This was at a not particularly selective D2. I don’t know if the athlete initiated contact or the coach. For whatever reason the coach lost one of his players last minute and needed a replacement. The kid got admitted to the school literally less than a week before classes started in the fall.

What division school, and have you been actively recruited by this coach this year?

D1, and in the beginning of the year they asked for my transcript and test scores saying that they were going to bring me on an official visit but that never happened even though I sent them my stuff. (My scores and grades are statistically in their >75%)

I would, as others suggested, reach out to the coach. You didn’t get an invite to an official, so they weren’t overly interested in you in the fall, but things with their recruits might have changed and if they can get you on the roster without using $$ or an admission slot, they might.

A D1 coach can get you admitted up until fall classes start, but they will only go to these lengths for highly recruited athletes. Since you were not invited for an official visit it doesn’t look good, but if you are only looking to walk on, and no money, I would contact the coach and ask for their help, you have nothing to lose.
