Though I'm a U.S citizen, I lived in India for 8 years. I came back to U.S when I was 9. Can colleges ask for a passport copy to verify this information.

Why would they?

Are you thinking that they want to verify you are a citizen? If so a birth certificate or other papers will suffice. Most Americans do not have passports because most do not travel overseas, so other documents are generally used.

I’m with BrownParent. Why would they?

If you are hired to work for the college/university, you will be required to provide proof of identity and US work eligibility for the I-9 form. Your US passport can be used for that.

If you will hold a particular scholarship that requires US citizenship, your US passport would be a valid ID document to verify that status.

If your passport has expired, it would be smart to get a new one. Lots of students end up doing study abroad programs, and you don’t want to be renewing your passport at the last minute.
