on this forum?

If they care to, they could. I don’t know which colleges would care about what posts here.

sounds a little suspicious…what did you do exactly?

I didnt do anything yet
But I want to post something that’s not college related (but not obscenities either) because there’s something I want to get off my chest and there’s no one else that’ll listen to me, especially those who know me because the issue is far too intimate(ly bad).

An admissions guy at MIT saw me posting something (after I was admitted) and just wanted me to take it down out of niceness to other applicants. He has an account here, so that may have been why he saw it.

^ I’m pretty sure that as long as you didn’t put super personal information (IE, name and social security number or something like that…) colleges can’t find out who you are in real life… it’s against Internet use policy for CC to disclose our emails and private info, right?

Oh I feel a lot safer now!

btw millancad, he sent you a PM or something right? He didnt CALL you to ask you to take it down, did he?

Millancad…How did the admissions person “see” you posting? Or did he/she see your post? He didn’t know who you were though, did he?

Antonio…just be sure you don’t say anything too personal. I’m guessing my neighbors are posting here too, but they (hopefully) wouldn’t know I’m “limabeans”. I’m not exactly fat, pasty, and green in real life…gee, why did I choose this name?!

Just as with ANYTHING you do online…you should understand that it is all transparent. Things you NEVER thought would “describe” you…can be compiled and you can be “IDd”.

You put a very thorough list of your stats in one post.
Then you do/say someting in another post you’re ashamed of.
A college could easily run a search and come up with students who match those stats. That’s gonna be a VERY small list if they know from your posts you’re a male, with a 2150 SAT, that you took the SAT twice, have 4 APs of 5,4,4,4, a 3.875uwGPA, live in “X” state, ran track all 4 years, captain of the debate team, applied to major in … let’s say anthropology. That will probably bring up ONE name.

If it’s not something you and your Momma would be proud of…why say it?

ok bottom line: can they track your IP?

Geez, they’re not the FBI!

Besides, you can post from any computer, so an IP still doesn’t exactly identify you. (i.e. could be a library computer).

I don’t recall posting my IP on any college apps I sent out, do you?

Yeah, exactly. How would colleges know your IP and who it belongs to,anyhow?!

i will

be back later

lol

well, no ones dumb enough to reveal their name but some sneaky admissions guys may just match your stats/essay/ecs to a name if they feel like it

ugh. i seriously doubt colleges have the time and/or desire to do that. i mean really, why in the WORLD would they care what you wrote on here?! it’s more worthwhile, even, to stalk your FB profile or something like that

That sounds kind of unethical, to search for applicants in CC.

antonio, do you need counseling? If so, get it rather than posting something intimately bad on this forum. It will be a lot more helpful to you.

He was emailing me at the time that I posted the thing, and in one of the emails he was like “Oh no! Can you take it down?” He knew who I was. I suppose he saw my post, because I don’t know how else he could have known I had posted, and my username here and my email name go together pretty well, so he knew I had posted it.

It was NBD though. Very minor. It wasn’t like they were going to call up because I did and say “Y’know that acceptance? We were JK.” It was just nicer for everyone else if I edited it out.

I agree, fuzzyfirebunny, that colleges aren’t sitting around DOING that. But…it’s possible. So you take your chances. Let’s say a kid is on a waitlist and that’s a small list of names, and they’ve given stats so they’re easy to pick out, and they say something horrific…and it just happens to come to the attention of admissions. I myself commented on a state uni thread about some of the ads along the side of CC, and whether or not prestigious schools advertised there. Someone from CC came on to comment about the revenue it provides, and how it helps CC be free. Not to be an alarmist, but…sometimes…Big Brother IS watching. Why would ANYONE post ANYTHING they were ashamed of?

Sure, colleges can find out who posted here – if you put enough info as to be identified, and if a college representative happens to read your post.

I ended up interviewing someone for an Ivy alum interview - whom I had seen posting here. Yes, those kind of coincidences happen. I had no question it was the same person because the person had listed their stats, city (my relatively small college city), race and ethnicity, type of school, ECs, and fact that their sibling attended Harvard. The constellation of info was unusual enough that it definitely was the same person whom I had seen posting here, and whom I also later saw here cursing at moderators.
