Someone asked me this point blank if all of the colleges can see the other colleges to which one has applied at about the same time through Common App, SAT scores, ACT score submittals. I know they can see from the FAFSA, but what about through these other venues? Anyone know for sure?

As far as I know, they cannot from the application / scores alone… But I can’t confirm it 100%.

Rice University, for one of its supplements, asks that we list all of the others universities we are applying to / have already applied to. I’d imagine they wouldn’t ask that question if they would know otherwise, so I’m under the impression that universities can only see where you have applied through FA forms.

I have seen colleges asking that question, and had also assumed that they could not from Common App alone. But then there are schools that do not use the common app or one can choose an alternate app so the quesiton such colleges ask are to get the whole spread, not just the common app schools.

I 'd like to know for sure.

Somewhere in the middle of a conversation with an admissions officer from a college I’d applied to, I mentioned how many other schools I’d applied to, and he reacted as if he had no idea. Similarly, once I was accepted to Columbia, I looked on one of those other university’s websites and found a status update saying they had already canceled my application since they learned I’d been accepted at “another college or university.” Also, when applying for scholarships with ApplyTexas, it asks which colleges you’re applying to, implying that colleges and universities don’t already know this. Like Ctesiphon said, they wouldn’t ask if they didn’t know. Finally, some students have applied to multiple schools though ED and REA simultaneously, even though it’s strictly forbidden, without getting caught by the colleges.

So, I think it’s valid to assume that they’re unable to see how many and which exact colleges you have applied to.

Especially with Common App, I think that the viewable files (Common App and Supplements) that you send off are all that the admissions offices will see. It may be mentioned somewhere on the website.
