Can GCs write bad things about you?

Can school guidance counselors write something bad about you without you being aware of it? For example, can there be some information about you in the school record which was never discussed or mentioned to you? Does the GC have an obligation to keep you informed of everything on your school record. I assume GC would have to tell you during the guidance meeting with you, right?

Do public schools usually have policies to avoid such negative surprises? Do they usually protect themselves from lawsuits with well written school board policies. Any interesting stories you guys are aware?

I don't know how public school guidance rules would be phrased in context of lawsuits, but here's my take:

Of course they can write negative things about you without you knowing. To not allow them to would be an enormous distortion of the whole process of evaluation. It's not valid if they just sugarcoat over what they see as problematic.

At the same time, if it's an objective issue that you should know about, I expect that they would tell you. I wouldn't say that they're required to by any means, though.

" I wouldn't say that they're required to by any means, though."

I am pretty sure they are required to report any disciplinary actions (like suspensions).

If counselors were not allowed to write negative comments, their letters would be worthless to colleges.
