My 4.0 midyear helped at Stanford. It is more of a help for those that did bette than previously; a few more A's won't help a 4.0 student get in.

High SAT's do not make up for mediocre grades. But an upward trend in grades is noted by schools.

all this is b u ll sh i t...if your grades are increasing...and you get a 2300...this shows that you are achieving...you are doing better...and so they will not put the emphasis on grades as much..and plus most ivies and top schools DO NOT LOOK AT YOUR FRESHMEN GRADES!

@jrpar and tribal45, so you think someone with upward trends and a strong SAT like 2200+ has a good chance at ivies? Given that there are still leadership position EC's and some passionate EC's and hobbies?

A-san, definitely, the Ivies have very intelligent admissions officers and if they see a distinctly upwards trend (ending up at 4.0 or close) with a challenging courseload, they will not look over you because of the overall GPA and/or classrank.

Don't give up :P

OMG OMG BLESS THE LORD!

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

my trend is HUGE freshman year 2.9... junior year 5.0( the max you can get at my school) I have reasons for my low grades freshman year too.. a lot of pets died in my family...

yeee this gives me hope.. one problem i have though.. is my courseload isn't very hard until junior year with all ap's... and senior year with 5 ap's... freshman year i had 3 honors but SOPH YR... i only had 1 honors course

what happens if your school doesn't rank?

I am in somewhat of the same boat (though mine goes something to the tune of 3.4----3.9----4.0ish----?) taking the hardest courses available.

"While Princeton ignores freshman year, my point was that my rank and GPA listed was for grades 9-12 and hence on paper looks very, very low. Princeton is so selective it is hard to interpret too much from a rejection, but I think it is possible things would have went somewhat differently if the appropriate GPA/rank were directly on my application."

However, since my school doesn't rank us at all, my freshman year will only hurt me if they choose to factor it in...right?
