Hi all,

This past year (sophomore year) I didn't do so great in school. My school is one of them arch-competitive ones (it is in the first half of these:

I didn't do so well in math and spanish, both of which were honors courses. I was wondering whether a high SAT score (hopefully >2300), two 800s on varied SAT II's (I already have), and 2 5's on AP exams would show those as anomalies if i applied to HYP. What do you all think?

If you go to one of these schools - Then top colleges will already know how rigorous the classes are and realize that getting all A’s in one of these schools is an extraordinary feat (at least in my school it is ((second half of that list)).

If you want to see how you stack up against your peers,

Search on Google “[your school name] college profile” and find the pdf link
Most top prep schools publish their college profiles publicly, and this is what colleges will look at when determining whether your grades are good.

You might have a problem with applying to lesser known colleges, though. (the ones that no one in your school ever matriculates to and has probably never heard of your school) Since they might not fully realize the rigor of the courses you take.

(this is basically what a senior at my school told me - So this might not be very true)

As long as your grades aren’t terrible, it should be fine.
Your SAT is not necessarily greater than grades, but knowing that your school is one of those schools then it changes things.
For other schools, like mine, I would say GPA is more important-as it shows your 4 year commitment to your high school career. That being said, it’s not like I can afford to have a bad SAT score either:)

There are many students out there who have a high GPA, along with outstanding SAT and AP scores. That being said, your high standardized test scores will surely boost your overall application but colleges will not look over your grades because of it. In my opinion, GPA and standardized test scores hold similar standings for colleges.

I always thought that GPA was more important than SAT. Just because GPA reflects your work ethic and routine, while SAT could just be you cramming hard for a month or two.

But a 4.0 GPA in one school could be 10x easier than a 4.0 in another school. (same goes for class rank). Whereas The SAT, for the most part, is consistent with its difficulty and ranking of students.

For example, A junior at my school once went to a public school and she got straight A’s - not even one A-. After a year a my school, she was a B and C student.

Colleges evaluate you based on the context of your school. They know which schools offer more rigorous courses/are easier to get a good GPA.
