Can I apply to Early Decision?

Hi there.
I will be taking my SAT I in the month of October, and my SAT II in November. And I wanted to apply to HYPM (one of the four) for SCEA (Single Choice Early Action - which college I go for will depend on my SAT score).
So, I read that for SCEA, my application should be there by first week of November. I wanted to ask , can I apply to any of the above schools, for SCEA with just my SAT Score and have my Subject Test scores sent later on? Or something like that? I am sorry if Im writing something wrong, Im getting really nervous now :|

And, it is also necessary to give atleast 2 Subject Tests for an Ivy, am i right ?

Are you an international student? If you are, re-read the websites for information that is specific to international students. Some places do not require all of the exams if you have other national scores such as A levels that you can submit.

As for whether you can apply without all of the scores in November, that is another question that you have to ask each of the admissions offices separately. Each of them sets their own policy and there is no easy way to predict this.

I had this same question in my mind lately. I sent an email to Stanford and they replied.

If you are planning to apply to our Restricted/Early Action Single Choice program (deadline November 1), November is too late to take SAT tests. It is advisable to take tests no later than October.
If you are going to apply to our Regular Decision (deadline January 1), you should not take the test later than December. January test scores will arrive too late for consideration.

Since SATll Subject Tests are not required for the evaluation, you will not be penalized if you don’t submit SATll Subject Tests scores. The scores of tests taken in November will be added to your file when received, but we cannot guarantee that they will arrive on time, even if rushed, for the evaluation.

There is your answer… :(

I would say most ED/EA schools will not take the November scores. They have very short window to make their decisions.

For their early action programs, HYPM (I assume M is MIT) accept through the Nov tests. However, to assure Nov tests arrive on time you need to specify the college in your test application as one to automatically receive scores upon release (i.e., as one of your free sends). That results in the fastest form of delivery and thus you cannot wait until you have your scores to order them sent.

Stanford accepts through the Oct test for its EA. However, you could possibly apply EA to it because it does not require SAT subject tests (it recommends them) and thus you can be considered for EA with only your Oct SAT score.

Also, contrary to what is mentioned above, majority of colleges with EA and ED programs do accept through the Nov tests for their programs. Nevertheless, there are a number like Stanford that cut you off with the Oct test.

Hi everyone, thanks for clearing my doubts up :)

happymomof1 : Yeah I’m an international. But I checked on the sites of all the four above mentioned colleges (HYPM) and it said I needed atleast two subject tests with the basic SAT (SAT I) exam , and it also said they did take November scores during SCEA. I just do not know how to go about it?! Thanks btw.

JemDKyl : Hi there. Ahh, is the SAT giving you the sleepless nights too? :stuck_out_tongue: Hehe.
Well, I am not applying to Stanford because they do not give financial aid to Internationals. (Sometimes I feel being middle class sucks) Or do they? :open_mouth:
So, my main concern is HYPM right now. Ill send an SCEA to one of them hopefully.
Where are you applying? Are you an international too?

oldfort : But Ive read a lot of people here who say they sent their applications later, and their scores later on, could that be done in any way? :(

drusba : Yes indeed M is for MIT. Okay, the financial aid too is a big factor here. I do not wish to go about applying in Unis that do not give FA to their students. Thus of all the ivies i singled out HYP, and MIT being another school that gives FA to internationals.
By the way, what exactly should I do to let them know that my Subject Test scores will be arriving later? Do I have to send them an email or something? :S Im sorry Im really confused with all this as I am apparently new . :|

Also, SCEA does have a significantly higher acceptance rate if I am not mistaken?

I stand corrected. I went on few school’s websites, and they do take Nov test scores.

OP - I am not sure what you are asking (to me). Your application needs to be sent on that date (Nov 1), but your test scores or teacher’s recs can be few days late. It is more important to get them in as early as possible for ED/EA because of short window. My kid was considering Yale last year and she was encouraged to submit her application as early as possible, before the due date.

oldfort - Sorry if I confused you.
I wanted to ask that, would sending my application before the deadline, but following up with my Subject tests later in November hurt my chances in any way?
And how could I possibly go about it?
Did your son/daughter get into Yale? :O

Yes, you can send in your application first then send other supporting documents later. You can tell Collegeboard to send your scores to Yale, but don’t try to send scores “rush.” I’ve heard that may even be slower sometimes.

My kid decided to ED Cornell instead of Yale because she didn’t feel Yale was the right fit for her. She did get into Cornell, so she was done in Dec. She did go back to Yale 3 times to make very sure it wasn’t for her (or I pushed her to make very sure that she didn’t want to go to Yale). Ultimately she decided on her own.

Guyinblue, for whichever of the four you choose to apply EA, HYP or M, all you have to do is designate the college as one of your free sends in the application for the Nov SAT test. That will result in the scores being sent quickly once the scores are determined. You don’t have to do anything special to tell the college that scores will come latter part of Nov. Without SAT subject tests in your file, your application file for those schools will be deemed incomplete and they will not be reviewing to determine admission until your file is deemed complete which will occur when the scores show up.

Also, I am not sure you are aware of this but MIT is not single choice early action. It is just early action and allows you to apply early elsewhere unlike HYP.

^ Not to mention, I don’t think MIT provides early action for internationals.

I’m not sure why your particular SAT score would matter which of these super selective schools is worthy of your application. They are on the whole equally selective and require top scores. If your October scores are not in the 2200+ range, however, I can see why you might not want to use your only early bid for any of those schools. As mentioned above, you can apply to MIT EA and to some other early programs.

oldfort - Okay. Thanks. That was just what I wanted to know. I’ll keep that in mind ^^
I know this is late, but Congratulations ! I can’t even think how going to Cornell would feel Your daughter must be hardworking. :)

drusba - Okay. Thanks for the clarification ! That does not in any way decrease my chances right ?
And I dont think I’ll apply to MIT since my main preference is to study Economics. At H/Y/P.

YaleGradandDad : Hmm, Im trying for 2350+/-30 . And it would matter because if I get 2350+ then I WILL apply to Harvard, and if anywhere between 2200 to 2350, then I’ll go for Yale or Princeton. I want to get a college for sure by December. And I will apply where I have the most chances. I feel that if used correctly SCEA can be really advantageous.
If my scores aren’t up there , it would more or less be a wastage of money. So yeah. Also my financials hold me back from applying to other schools. :|
