Can I be classified as a Michigan resident?

I'm going to be an international applicant next year - I'm not a citizen nor am I a permanent resident, but we technically do have a status here (came on a visa). We've lived here for 8 years and paid Michigan taxes during the whole time. Would I still have to pay the OOS tuition or can I qualify for the in-state tuition?

If you are not a US citizen or an eligible permanent resident, you will probably not qualify for in-state tuition. Check with the school to be sure, but that is usually the case.

Isn’t the reason they look for that is because they think you don’t pay taxes otherwise? Since they’re public universities, they’re funded by taxes, which we have been paying for quite some time now…plus, my high school diploma would be from a Michigan high school. Wouldn’t that play a role?

Not according to their rules for residency as posted above. It is pretty much the norm for most State Us that a non citizen/permanent resident is considered an international student and not eligible for instate tuition.

Check with the school if you want a definite answer. Good luck.

Also…I don’t think UMich gives financial aid to international students…something to consider…and since you don’t have permanent residency, you would not be eligible for any U.S. federally funded aid.

I wasn’t too interested in UMich…what about MSU? Are they basically the same? I looked at their residency requirements page and I got a little lost…

Michigan State has virtually the same statement about non-US citizens as UMich:
[MSU RO: Out-Of-State Tuition Regulations](<a href=“MSU RO: Error 404: Web Page Not Found”>MSU RO: Regulations for Qualifying for In-State Tuition)

How could you get lost in that?
