This is probably the dumbest question but I'm just not sure if it applies to me and would like someone else's input before I begin applying to schools. Neither of my parents went to any type of college and I am the oldest child in my family but one of my aunts on my fathers side did. I'm not sure if this automatically disqualifies me. I do have cousins that went but I know they don't necessarily apply to this situation. Sorry for the dumb question but I haven't been able to find anything online on the subject. Thanks in advance.

It’s just if your parents went to college. So you’re good.

Yes. You are first generation if your parents did not go to college.

Sorry, not to highjack your post but I have a similar question. Am I still a first gen if one of my parents got a degree in another country that the US doesn’t recognize? My mom has a masters from India in poli sci, but it’s not like she can go work for the government or anything.

No, in my mind if your mother went to college in India and got her master’s degree, that is a college education. Otherwise, you would be saying that if you lived in India and got your bachelor’s degree in the U.S., you would not be considered college eduated…

On the applications they will ask about mother’s education and father’s only. Then they decide if they want to consider you first gen or not. They don’t ask you to determine that. Just answer honestly what colleges they attended or not and don’t worry further.
