In my upcoming sophmore year I was scheduled to take AP World History and A.P English. I had transferred out of that school though because it was honestly terrible. Environment to learn and succed was not there and things like drug deals in class or disrespecting the the teacher were daily. I had the grades to a far better school which was also my interest so I left. But I feel as if I lost my chance to take 2 AP classes early on.So I’m wondering if it would be possible to plead a case to my guidance counselor if I could take the 2 AP Classes without reccomendation or be able to take it the spring term. Thank you for time and reading my first post.
Your new school will see the courses you selected for sophomore year on you transcript and and place you into them. If not, email your former counselor/teachers to inform your new teachers
Some schools require a rec, some now allow you to be the ultimate decision. You need to speak to the new GC to plan your schedule before it gets “fixed” (any day now).
At my high school, there aren’t any recommendations necessary in order to take an AP class. However, at my friend’s high school, you have to be approved in order to take an AP class. I would make an appointment with your guidance counselor and explain your situation (how you already signed up to take 2 AP classes). Most likely, you’ll be placed into those classes since you already signed up for them at your old school. It would be difficult for your new school to require a recommendation because your guidance counselor would only go off of your old transcript. In my opinion, it would be unfair to not place you in an AP class- your new counselor doesn’t “know” you too well. So I would definitely talk to your counselor ASAP about making sure that you’ll be able to take the AP classes.
You can join any classes without recommendation, UNLESS there are requirements for that class at your new school that were not prevalent at your old school. At my school, in order to take AP Bio, AP Chem, or AP Enviro, you need to have first taken Biology or Chemistry, while at other schools I see students take AP Bio sophomore year. If there is a requirement for a class you think you can override (like a class you’re good at but haven’t taken) I think you should ask your GC to take the final for that class and if you pass you can get the req. out of the way. Good luck!
Or, unless the school says students need a recommendation. Many/most AP classes do not have unlimited sections and each section undoubtedly has an enrollment cap, so some method of limiting enrollment is usually needed. Individual schools are free to set their own policies. If a class is already at capacity with better qualified students, it is illogical to think that exceptions would be made.
