Can I double major between 2 different schools at AU?

To be specific, I’d like to major in Film& Media ( which is at the School of Communication) and International Studies ( School of International Service). Is this allowed? And if so, how does does double majoring work between two different schools at AU?

Yes, you can absolutely do that double major. In fact, SOC requires that if you do an SOC major then you either need to do a double major or at least a major/minor, and either way they can’t both be within SOC. I believe that you will end up with 2 advisors who will work together to make sure that you choose the right classes to satisfy the 2 majors.

Yes, what Lr4150 said is correct. One of the cool things about AU is that you are admitted into the University itself and not a school within the university, this means that getting into SIS isn’t harder than getting into SOC for example. So if you are admitted into SOC you wont need to submit another application inorder to major in SIS, you will be placed in the school at your request. If you are planning on double majoring in Film and International studies, please keep in mind that International Studies has a very demanding course load, it requires 64 credits plus 3-20 credits in a language depending on your knowledge of a language upon entrance into AU. This means that if you do not know a language coming into AU, the International Studes Major will require over 80 credits(though 18 of these may be used to fulfill Gen Ed requirments).

So is it basically impossible to double major in both due to scheduling or just a more demanding workload.

I don’t think it’s impossible, on the SOC page they have a “Student Ambassador Section”, I saw someone with an SOC and SIS double major. I do think that it may be a little restrictive though, you won’t have much room for electives since you have to satisfy Gen Ed Requirmets and the requirments for your majors. If you’re coming into AU with AP credits it might be more doable. Also,Keep in Mind you don’t HAVE to have a double major if you are in SOC. I’m pretty sure you can major in SOC and minor in another school, that might be a viable option if you want to study in the SIS. I recommend that you study in the SOC and SIS and see whether a double major or a major and a minor suits you best.

it is possible and encouraged that you double major (as i am)

It really doesn’t matter if you double major or not. Just know that chances of double majoring in two programs that don’t have overlapping classes will significantly lower the chances of you going study abroad. Also, don’t head on over to your academic adviser and ask how to double major and what they think on it because they’ll just discourage it thinking you’re way in over your head. Most academic advisers will tell you that you should consider taking a few classes in your second major before you even consider declaring it (which you won’t for a LONG time anyways!)

Basically, from what I can see, it shows that Visual Literacy is the only general education and Film and Media Arts overlapping course. You’re going to be taking gen eds for awhile so don’t get ahead of yourself and take a few courses and see if you like it before you go about doing anything. All of this isn’t to say I discourage double majoring (a lot of people do it) – all I’m saying is… hmm… basically keep your options open pretty much!

Consider a minor instead of a major in one of the two areas if you want to have more flexibility for study abroad, internships and jobs.
