Can I escape the Asian-ness?

It's ok leah.

Yeah I kind of noticed that. Most of the asians at my school live in asia.

Why do you want to escape it? Embrace it.

(LOL...I just wanted to say that; don't begin on the admissions chances for ORMs...but really, why?)

same here like futurenyustudent. I hate science. noot ever thinking about MIT or Caltech. i am planning to major in marketing/advertising.

Yeah I'd rather stab both my eyes out, cut off an arm and a leg, get run over by an oncoming 747 at Logan Airport, and jump off the bridge connecting Logan and Boston than even THINK about going to MIT or CalTech. At least I'd get my own parking space and various perks and benefits.

Anyways, finance major here, set on investment banking->MBA->more investment banking->venture capitalist.

BTW I'm NOT a self-mutilator.

It's unfortunate that stereotypes and such can effect something as incredibly important as where you'll get into college.

But, on a lighter note, I have a really good Chinese friend. We, sadly, refer to his actions and abilities because of his "Asian-ness," but honestly, he fills some of the stereotypes himself. Once I found a pair of numchucks (sp?) on a couch backstage in my school's theatre, and whaddya know? They belonged to him? (that's only one example of him setting himself up for our friendly banter)

I feel that I've been very un-Asian in many ways[/unquote]One extension to "un-Asianness" would be to look beyond the same 10 schools.

Apply to some of the awesomely good schools that take kids nearly exclusively based on academic credentials (and, happily enough, give generous merit aid! - save some money for professional school)

Asians suck, nuf said

"2nd generations tend to hate engineering. Most asians I know are avoiding it like the plague although quite a few are interested in biotech."

lol avoiding it like the plague - same in my school. just about every asian student's parents have worked at lucent, at&t/bellabs, etc. engineering has such a 'blah' reputation among asians around here. and why not MIT, the #1 ivy party school? Sloan, anyone?

Sloan, anyone?
No thanks. My last position on this school stands. I'd rather go to Wharton.

no, I'm just wondering why everyone is so anti-MIT? MIT isn't just engineering... and what's wrong with sloan?

futurenyu: lbw?

What? No, I'm not going to LBW.

MIT is evil and overrated. That's the reason I hate MIT.

There, I said it. Let the heads roll.

mit has a top business program, you guys know that right? And why would you want to escape the asian-ness? Before high school, i was like some of the poster on this board, thinking that being asian is bad and nerdy. But now, well lets just say asians are accepted by everyone in my school. Sure sometimes people do crack a "your asian you should be good at math joke," but I just laugh it off because they're just joking. futurenyustudent, you kind of sound like you don't like being asian at all. No offense

Bah, I just went to sloan's website and posted right in front is a picture of an asian graduate with glasses.

what's Sloan?

for undergrad bus

1 wharton (upenn)

2 sloan (mit)

3 university of michigan ann arbor / uc berkeley

sloan - mit's biz school

Asians are awesome and can do anything. (~I love ya Steve!~) Enough said. :D

Hey Rasp--your post made me happy...
I'm glad I made you happy. :D

I don't get what's up with Asians and science and engineering. My parents are forcing me to major in either one of those, or else they're not paying my tuition. So I plan to double major in biology (the only science I don't outright suck at) and pyschology (what I really like).

"I don't get what's up with Asians and science and engineering. My parents are forcing me to major in either one of those, or else they're not paying my tuition."

Are you serious? OMG...

I want to major in Business (Marketing/Advertising or maybe Economics)
My paretns have no problem with Biz at all...they tell me that fine as long that I will be happy with what I am going to study at college. They're not the type of "Go to Harvard!!!"

I can't blame my parent for my asian-ness either they could care less what i become, but majoring in science/engineering seems sooooo right for me.
