Can I escape the Asian-ness?

actually my parents would rather me go into management or business or English rather than bio...which is what i want to get into...oh and health policy

Are you serious? OMG...

It's not that bad once I thought about it. At least my parents are willing to pay my tuition under certain conditions; there are a lot of kids out there whose parents won't pay a single dime for. Besides, learning a tough subject is a lot easier than slaving away at a minimum wage job in order to pay $40000 a year. :)

You guys are so full of yourselves. Do you really think you are superior to the other two races because your parents close you indoor and make you study all day long?

Yes.

BTW, there are more than 3 races in the world.

um...actually i had gotten a full tuition scholarship from a decent school, and my parents rather me go to Duke...but I have to get like all As which sucks

So would you say an asian with a non-Asian sounding name would be better off not choosing a ethnicty on their college apps?

Nameless: You don't know what you're talking about. If we were to really be precise, there would be as many races as six billions. Did you know that a White is Black just because his great-great grand-father is? That's why there are three major races. You're free to further subdivide them buddy.

... how in the world can you say that there are only three races? I guess you haven't taken any standardized tests lately... the 'ethnicity' part always has at least ten different boxes you can check.

ethnicity is not the same thing as race.

First: In your three-race picture, I'm assuming you have white, black, and "Asian". Now, where do the (just as important as the others, by the way) Hispanics/Latinos fit in? Are you calling them black? White? Neither makes sense.

Second: I'm proud of being Indian, but I would be proud of being Hispanic, black, white, or being of countless other nationalities/races/ethnicites as well. In my opinion, if you think that your "race" is inherently better than another, you don't deserve to belong to the only "race" that only matters: the human one.

Third: I think I have done a reasonably good job of "escaping" the Asian stereotype (not that I was trying). I play the trombone, I play soccer and run track (track is really uncommon for Indians, soccer a bit less so) and my life sport is basketball, which I have had to give up in high school for (d'oh) Scholastic Bowl. Oh well, you can't win everything. And on top of all that, I have a profound love of rap, R&B, and hip-hop, which I suppose came from playing basketball with a bunch of awesome black people.

Fourth: The parts of the Asian stereotype I do indulge (Scholastic Bowl, math team, WYSE, etc) in are things that I truly enjoy. Heck, I like getting straight A's for the same reason that I like my sports: I love to win, even when I'm facing off against myself. I suppose I was lucky to have parents that didn't push me into all of the stereotype staples. I started most of my activities from a young age in a sincere and innocent effort to emulate my older brother.

In conclusion, I want to echo some of the previous posts. Do what you love. If you are one of the unfortunate kids who are pushed in to everything, try finding something you like about your current activities that doesn't have anything to do with what your parents want. Not only does that give room for some much-needed rebellion, it also imbues a passion into your work that will hopefully show up on a college application.

In case there was any previous debate over what a stereotypical Asian is...this will settle it.

Okay maybe not, but I seem to see this waaay too much in the What are my Chances forum. I'm not trying to be racist about this, but it does seem to be not uncommon on this site. Here's a standard "stereotypical" Asian post.

On a final note...if you can tell me what order this "stereotypical Asian's" preference of college was listed in, you'll get extra credit!

also for the asian stereotype...varsity tennis

no offense anyone, but tennis is like the sports non-athletic asians do (for the most part) just to say that they have some kind of sport...

um hey i play soccer so pffttt <3 that sport...tho i would agree with you. At my school there is more asians playing tennis than any other sport (at least woman's)

oh and one more thing...just because Asians have good GPA and great extracurriculars doesn't mean all Asians have great extracurriculars and GPA. Like duh

I wouldn't worry about it. If anything, being asian will help you in some areas (for those colleges, companies looking for diversity) - what ever helps, go for it.

excuse me - just because tennis is a country club, non-contact sport, it doesn't mean that you don't have to be athletic to do it. look at all the top players: federer, nalbandian, NADAL and his guns

it's true that a lot of asians play tennis and run xc, but if asians play tennis and aren't good at it, colleges won't find that appealing anyway.

A note on my post above on the fifth page....I was being sarcastic if anyone missed that.

now im confused but whatev

I’m an Asian Descendant 2. As I become older, I become more aware of what I am, what I need to do for our community, the community consists of whites/Hispanics/vast Asians (Hmong, Viet, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese). Nearby Comm. college will be offering a new Modern Asian History course this summer, and I look forward to garnering a stronger knowledge base to fuel my interest. But my efforts don’t even have to be so global. I began tutoring a young Asian immigrant in English this year, which was a very fulfilling and brought back memory of my own struggles. Such needs often get lost in the stereotypical image of the successful Asian, and I hope to look into some kind of organization dedicated to linking students with recent Asian immigrants in the area. Ultimately, I’d like to do something tangible.

confused_student--the colleges were listed in ABC order. Duh. Lol jk. Prestige, obviously.
