I read that CMU gives more aid to "appealing students" and students of minority. That being said, if admitted, can I expect more aid from CMU then usual given I would definitely attend given that aid? And can anyone give me a chance for the Carnegie Scholarship, if accepted? My family makes pretty good income that our EFC is pretty much cost of attendance, but DEfinitely not enough to pay $60,000 a year for undergrad.

My stats are:

2260 SAT, 800 Math 720 CR 740 Writing
35 ACT 35 English 35 Math 33 Reading 35 Science
96 W GPA, 92 UW GPA
Top 10%, 20/202
AP Classes taken: WH. English lang, Physics B, U.S History (4 on all except Physics B with a 5)
Taking currently: English Lit, Calculus BC, Chemistry, Macro/Micro economics, physics C (both exams)

If your EFC is the cost of attendance - you will not receive any aid. I think the Carnegie scholarships are about $10,000 and I have no idea how competitive or how many they give out.

Carnegie scholarships are exceedingly rare - there were about 25 a year the year my D received one (we were stunned !). Last year I spoke with one of the Adcoms - (we ran into each other on campus) – as I had remembered meeting him atsleeping bag weekend where we met. The year my S applied with equally strong stats, he did not receive one. He has a friend who is also a senior as is my daughter- -he has one too (the friend is a white male CS major). Last year CMU modified the program and are trying to spread the money to more students to make it possible for more to attend - that was essentially his words. There are no more than 5 -10 given per year at this point. They awards used to range from a half of tuition guaranteed for four years up to full tuition. Adcom said now they are much smaller so more people get access to the funds. These are for people that just don’t have good stats (as you do and pretty much everyone accepted in the pool) but for people identified to add something unusual to campus and for students who will fit the criteria of being identified as “tomorrow’s leaders”.
In short- don’t count on it - don’t even think it possible. If it happens, be amazed and be humbled. You’d have just as good a chance winning the Gate Millen or other prestigious external awards like the Ron Brown scholarship or Siemens or Intel-- Rare rare rare odds.

The carnegie scholarships are about 10k - I received one.

From what I understand it’s less about stats and more about 1) if you’re a middle-class applicant and 2) if you have leadership experience/potential.

So, if your EFC is the cost of attendance and have no leadership experience, you can pretty much forget it.
