Can I get a review of the Media and Communications department at Temple?

I’m narrowing down my choices for colleges and I want to really know how good the comm department is at Temple. How soon can you start taking courses? Is there a strong faculty? How good are the internships a student can get? My other top choices include Hofstra and Syracuse if that helps.

do you mean media studies and production? my son loves it and that dept and Temple’s TV station are what i think made Temple his top choice. do you have ideas on costs between the 3 schools yet? i seem to think Syracuse is strong in that area too but since Syracase was not on my son’s list at all, i don’t that much about it. and he is a second semester freshman and is taking his third media course already.

@ctl987 Yes, that’s what I mean and Hofstra isabout $56,000 and I received a $14,500 scholarship and I am still waiting on a decision from Syracuse and since I’d be living at Temple, I’d be paying $30,000 with no scholarship

ok then- How soon can you start taking courses? immediately. you do need to take media technology(media tech) before you are allowed to take some of the other classes. my kid could not get into media tech his first semester but is taking it now. he took the other 2 required intro courses his first semester.

Is there a strong faculty? I don’t really know. Profesor Amy Caples was on a TV station for years and seems to be a bit of a Philly celebrity, from what i have gathered. Not sure on rest. Good teachers, so far for my kid. Not sure any are famous.

How good are the internships a student can get? From what we’ve been told, pretty good. Temple has some upper level internship classes and i have heard they have leads into the Philly media area. i can answer that question better in about 2 to 2.5 years.

i would not pay the extra 12K plus a year just to go to Hofstra. it’s on long island, which is nice, and convenient to NYC. it’s a nice school but it’s not so outstanding, i’d want to pay that price. Temple may be closer to 32K rather than 30 as an FYI.

@ctl987‌ I am assuming that you are in state?

yes, we are in state

Hi ctl987… we are talking a lot lately  my s will be in SMC too if he attends Temple. We are very local to Temple that is really the only drawback for him. That said, we loved Syracuse campus, but the town was nothing compared to Philadelphia, opportunities-wise. Nice to hear the media classes start right away. My son has done some local Philadelphia high school learning programs at KYW Philadelphia where the instructors and on air personalities either attended Temple or Syracuse. I’m hoping if he chooses Temple he goes all the way, with NYC and LA travel and abroad with SMC.

he can also go to London abroad with SMC!!! Philly would be more fun than Syracuse but i get the live too close to Philly issue and he;d like to go further away. is your son the one also looking at Hofstra?

momshouse, i just remembered i know a mom who has kids of both Temple and Syracuse. do you want me to work on getting her contact info for you?

@momshouse did your son do the KYW Newstudies Program this past year? I did this and I know exactly what you’re talking about

I’m not an SMC student, however, I have quite a few friends that are SMC students. I know two that will be interning in L.A. this summer because of the programs success among hollywood celebrities. ( I know Kunal Nayar and some guy Jessie Williams went to Temple). I have another friend that will be taking advantage of an internship with top media production companies here in Philadelphia. If you do the work at SMC, explore your interests in making videos, then you will do very well.

kunal nayar from the Big Bang got a masters in fine arts in temple’s theatre dept. as far as i know, he was not formally associated with SMC. Still, he and his wife put up a sizeable scholarship endowment in the theatre dept so he is clearly proud of his ties to Temple and has credited Temple in interviews.
