Hi- I know there have been threads before on the BU vs. Syracuse Comm topic but they are not recent. My DD want to go into Film and TV. She was very lucky and got into some great schools with merit (Emerson, BU, Syracuse, Binghamton, etc.). She has narrowed it down to Syracuse (scholarship and honors program) vs BU. Both seem to have a lot of pros and a few cons. Putting aside the weather and location, I would love to hear from alumni/current students from both schools regarding internships, job opportunities and overall experiences.
She is really stuck between the two, but leaning towards Syracuse. It is hard to ignore a very generous merit scholarship and honors program. There is no contest that BU wins in location (not campus), Boston is beautiful, but we live near NYC so it is not like we do not have the opportunity to live near a big city. From my research and a bit of common sense the entertainment industry can be hard to brake into and alumni and good internships are vital for jobs. Sounds like Newhouse and Comm have good alumni but would love to hear first hand.
Appreciate any information.
@Greenwichctmom …Newhouse is very hands on. My daughter is studying Advertising and guest lecturers from the best NYC firms seem to be at Newhouse either every week or every other week. Many of her Advertising professors were rainmakers in the industry, ran offices, and managed the largest Fortune 100 clients. The Newhouse faculty all have major industry experience. My daughter’s Newhouse advisor and freshman Communications professor has produced Indie films and edited a number of famous Spike Lee movies. Danny Zucker who produces Modern Family and Aaron Sorkin, the famed screenwriter, are SU grads. The semester in LA for Newhouse TRF students is fantastic. My daughter will be working a great internship in NYC this summer. Your daughter has two great choices. Good luck with your decision.
Syracuse is nationally known, and often makes top 10 lists for journalism. Based purely on the programs, there is no question in my mind. The internship funfatdaddy mentions is also crucial. You want to walk out four years later with your degree and a portfolio of your work.
Thank you very much funfatdaddy and Picapole for your information. The clock is ticking for her decision.
I’m a first year student in Newhouse and also in the Honors College. Since no one here has talked about honors, I guess I’ll give you some info! The honors program is honestly my favorite thing at Cuse. The class sizes are small, the courses offered are incredible, plus there are many trips and different things planned. It opens you up to a different side of college by providing an atmosphere that is focused on academic excellence through enrichment.
Thanks@syracuse19- my D just committed to Syracuse. I hope she has the same great experience that you had. Did you happen to get an internship for the summer?
@greenwichctmom…I just relied to a post of yours about roommates. My DD is also going to be studying Radio, Film &Television in the Newhouse School. She also had her heart set on going to Boston but after much thoughtful research decided that Syracuse was best for her.
@Greenwichctmom I did not apply to any internships, so no. I have to work this summer so I opted for getting a job. There is plenty of time for doing that kind of thing though and sometimes Newhouse won’t let you take an internship until you’ve reached a certain level of education just because they want to ensure that their name is being associated with a good experience for that company.
Syracuse for sure. Newhouse is topnotch
Regarding internships, I know many of my friends (all first-year students) received offers and positions at NBCUniversal. Like many other big media companies, they come to 'Cuse and recruit students. I highly recommend networking, talking to the amazing career services on campus and maximizing all your resources (talking to your professors, upperclassmen, TAs, etc)
