Last semester I had to leave college because my dad was diagnosed with cancer and I was the one who had to take him to surgeries, treatments, etc. So now I owe about $1,500 to the college because of financial aid and me leaving school. They say I can’t go back until I get it paid off. I was wondering if I could get a student loan to pay off the debt that I owe the college?
Did you get incompletes or take a medical leave?
You can only take a student loan if you are enrolled in college.
Look for student loans that cover prior balances - some lenders do have these. I don’t really encourage them, but I have worked with students who borrowed these in the past. They felt that they were the only way they could get themselves back on track with school. If you do borrow this type of private loan, concentrate on getting it repaid as quickly as possible.
Do you have a job now?
Did you ask your school to consider why you left and to adjust your bill? Discuss this with them, If you have proof of your categiving duties.
I got incompletes, I was not aware of medical leave. I am enrolled in college but they won’t let me sign up for classes until I pay off the debt. My credit is not very good where I don’t really have any so a few private lenders have already turned me down. Plus I have no one to co-sign for me. I do have a part time job and can barely pay the bills as it is. I’ve been looking for a full time job but I’m from a small town so there really isn’t much work, you have to take what you can get. I just really want to go back to school. I am going this coming Tuesday to talk with the school and see if there is anything I can do to help me go back either this spring semester or at least the summer semester. That’s why I was wondering if I could get a student loan to pay off the debt. Thank you guys for all of your comments!
Doesn’t an incomplete mean that you can finish the work later? If you did would you then not owe the money?
Can you get a letter from a doctor to explain that you were the sole caretaker?
You need to find out the time one for competing those courses. Can you complete them?
