can i get in

I am a junior with a 2.9 GPA unweighted in almost all IB classes, have 650 on reading, 600 on math and 500 on writing sat scores.I have over 250 hour of community service and political activism and am a minority student .My grades were awful the first two years of high school but have been almost all A's this year and I think the trend will happen again next year with lots of AP's instead of IB's.Do you think I can get into umass amherst, University of New Hampshire,University of Vermont ,George Washington University,George Mason University, and BU?Can apply eary to any?

Not GWU or BU

Crank

I completely understand about the GPA and that your grades are much better junior year. However, your SAT’s are still very average and writing poor.

Here’s my recommendations:

Do not apply anywhere ED or EA - you’re going to need the 1st semester senior grades to show the admission officers at all the universities you listed that your grades are still improving - especially if you’re getting A’s in AP/IB classes.

Take a SAT prep course to improve your SAT’s and re-take. Also, consider taking the ACT if you’re more analytic and knowledge-based. you’d be surprised how many students do better on the ACT than the SAT.

INTERVIEW - there you can explain your poor grades early in high school and how you’ve taken corrective action.

Your EC’s are commendable, but in the admission process they really count for little.

CJ

Too late to request an interview with GW- the deadline was Nov. 15.

^^^
OP is a junior

Oh- missed that. Then def. plan on an interview.

Your GPA is (obviously) very low. You’ll need extremely good grades in solid classes, and perhaps more (better) ECs. You’ll need amazing test scores to counter the low GPA.

Also start now to look for teachers that can write very strong recommendations for you, and ask them to directly address your improvement. You also might want to try the ACT, some people do better on that.
