Hello, I'm Mikaela, and I'm a sophomore from NJ. I plan to major in chemical engineering.

Currently-GPA-102.3 (but definitely going up, I'm doing better this year).
Rank-6/491
SAT-1950 (it was a practice test if it matters, 650 or so in each subject)
Extra curriculars-XC, indoor and outdoor track my freshman year, XC and indoor this year, the next two years I'm doing marching band and outdoor and -maybe- indoor, and some clubs.

Obviously I plan on bringing my SAT scores up, I mean I'm only a sophomore and I haven't taken it for real yet. If I can bring up my GPA a little as well, do you think I could get into MIT? What are some other good chemical engineering schools (preferably not in California, I want to leave New Jersey but I don't want to be on the other side of the country).

Well… more information is needed about you. How is your course strength (how rigorous are they?), is your GPA out of 100, because a 102 is AMAZING. If you’re looking into MIT, then you’re EC’s are going to have to show some interest in math and science, and no offense, but it’s obvious you’re resume-boosting when you say, “some clubs”, and colleges absolutely HATE that. So yeah, more info is needed!

Freshman Year-
Honors English
Honors Biology
Honors Geometry
Advanced World History (figures, this year they offer honors, last year they didn’t)
Latin 1
French 1
And PE and Lunch

Sophomore Year-
Honors English
Honors Chemistry
Honors Algebra 2
Honors US History 1
AP Statistics
Latin 2
PE and Lunch

Junior Year (I hope)-
Honors English
Honors Physics
Honors Trig/Precalc
AP US History 2
AP Chemistry
Latin 3
PE and either lunch or “The Art of Giving” which is a giving back to the community class

Senior Year (hopefully)-
AP Lit
AP Calc
AP Bio
AP Government and Politics
AP Psych
Latin 4
AP Physics? (the teacher in my school is known for being really, really bad and it’s a GPA killer)
PE and if I don’t take physics, lunch

My GPA is out of 100, weighted. So far this year I believe I have a 105 or so.

I say some clubs because I’m not really sure what I’m doing next year. I’m looking for some math/science related programs in my area, but I can’t find anything. My school does not have a math team or science club or anything like that.

Glad you’re thinking about college now. Your grades seem to be very good (though what is your UNWEIGHTED GPA?). You will need to have very good SATs to match your grades. Practicing for that is good. If you do really well on the PSAT as a Junior you could make National Merit Finalist which would open up scholarships at schools across the country. Keep working hard.

And MIT is a reach for everyone! Don’t fall in love with just one school.

I know it’s a reach, I’m still looking for alternatives. There’s a few decent engineering schools here in NJ I believe? I have no clue what my unweighted gpa is. Somewhere around a 96 or 97? I got…203 total on my PSATS this year, and 181 when I took them as a freshman.

You took them as a freshman?? Wow luckyy, I thought only sophomores and juniors were given the option. As for good engineering schools in NJ, you’re right on. You have Rutgers and NJIT, they’re really nice for that. Hmm, you don’t have a science or math team, so maybe you should try to do something in either CTY or EPGY. Take some advanced courses there and EXCEL (because MIT is super competitive, but I bet yo already knew that haha), and research is always key too! And don’t let the risk of a lower GPA stop you from taking courses that you WANT to take (AP Physics). Oh, and did you look into starting a team at your school? That would give you and your fellow classmates a shot to compete in science and it looks terrific on college apps. Good Luck Man!! Class of 2012 baby!! :D

Your SAT’s need to go up but I wouldn’t worry about that. The scores will go up as you get further through high school, that’s a great starting point for a sophomore. However… a school like MIT will absolutely want to see AP Calc BC, is there any way to boost what math you’re taking? Otherwise, you’re off to a great start! :)

My school screwed up last year and wound up with too many tests or something, so honors freshmen could take it.

There’s no way I could take calc BC. I can’t double up the next two years and the only year I could, my school threw a hissy fit when I asked and said that there was no way I could handle it (which is totally unfair, my middle school unweighted GPA was like 99.5). However they let people in lower levels double up…my school hates honors students, I swear.

I don’t know how to go about starting things…I tried to start a duct tape club and got yelled at.

I make flowers and purses and such. Not like bondage… Haha I think I got in trouble because I didn’t get it approved by the board…but no one knows how I’m supposed to go about that? I’d love to start either that or a chemistry club. Oh well I’ll figure it out I suppose…I mean my school has an Alzheimer’s club.
