I am a white male and a senior in high school. My reaches are Dartmouth, Georgetown, and Vanderbilt. I am applying as an English major.
ACT: 35 composite (36 Reading, 35 English, 34 Science, 33 Math, 11 Writing)
GPA: 3.96
SAT2: 700 in Literature
AP: 5 in World History, 5 in US History, 4 in Biology
I have taken 9 APs. I am taking 5 this year as well as Advanced Art and I should be receiving grades ranging from B+ to A (GPA would be like a 4.1 approx).
I am the editor-in-chief and founder of my school newspaper. I interned at a local newspaper.
I am the vice president of a school Biology Research Club.
I run a school nursery program (volunteering thing).
I received a prize for excellence in English my freshmen year, a prize for community service in junior year, and I was elected to Cum Laude Society (the high school one) as a junior.
I come from a mildly well-off family and currently attend a boarding school. However, as I have three siblings, I will be applying for financial aid. However, I don’t expect finances to be a major determining factor in whether or not I’d attend.
What do you think my chances of admission are? If you have any suggestions for colleges that better fit my profile please suggest them! Thank you
Honestly, I think you have good chances getting into those schools. I would consider them to be between target and reach range. Your ACT score is phenomenal, however I never really know how to interpret GPAs because they vary by school and school rigor and other factors, so I won’t comment on that. With stellar letters of recc, standout supplements, and a memorable essay, you’ll increase your chances of admission (which I know you’re aware of already). I would say to keep these schools as your reaches and definitely hope for the best. Targets for you would be more like Tufts, UNC, some of the UC’s maybe, maybe even Cornell. Other reaches you might consider would be Duke, Harvard, UChicago, you get the gist. Wishing you the best of luck!!
Hi @waipouli,
Stats: Nice job, I would try to retake that SAT Lit score though since it is directly tied to your intended major. What’s you weighted GPA? UW looks good but weighted will determine the rigor you took.
ECs: Fairly average, unless that internship with the newspaper company is super special, you will need a recommendation from them in order to make it more meaningful for your application.
Awards: Freshman year awards are a little too far back to have any meaning, I wish you had some type of writing contest award or a book prize from a college
Overall:
Dartmouth: reach
Georgetown: reach
Vanderbilt: reach
Keep in mind that most of these schools are reaches for everyone. Admissions to these is basically a lottery. Good Luck!
