I'm currently a junior in high school and I'm really hoping to get into Pratt Institute in Brooklyn for communication design. I am working on putting a portfolio together and I got a 1930 on my SAT. I also volunteer at the animal shelter and I'm in a leadership position in the school band which I have been in since freshman year. My biggest downfall is my GPA which is 2.6 weighted. I heard that Pratt is really picky with GPAs and i'm super worried. My school works on a trimester system and I have this last trimester and one more. Is it possible for me to bring it up or should I just give up on my Pratt dreams?
Advice would be appreciated!

Pratt Institute: Reach

With a GPA like that, you should really begin focusing on your portfolio, as Pratt weighs much of their decision on it. Your SAT scores are up-to-par. I would chance it at a reach for right now, which could switch to a low reach with a great portfolio. Take a look at schools like SVA for design as well.

What is your race, and do you have legacy? As a junior myself, I’ve heard that Asians are judged more harshly than whites of African-Americans are, so your race is a factor. Also for legacy, I know of people who got into Cornell on 1800 SAT’s and minor criminal records, just because they had relatives who had went there.
Also, it really depends on your essay, your teacher recommendations, and all of the other stuff. Don’t rule it out; I think you have a fighting chance. I would say Pratt is a reach.

Forgot to mention, you might want to consider taking a look into PrattMWP, a Pratt branch school in Utica, NY with a two-year program that allows students to transfer to the Brooklyn campus once complete. It’s apparently easier to get into and tuition is cheaper.

Don’t give up - your gpa may affect the scholarships you are offered but if your portfolio is good and your scores are good, it might still work. My daughter is in the program and loves it. It is well worth it so dream big.
