but recently I decided I'd to write for movies or television. Given that my interest was sparked only recently I have no experience.

I went to an open house yesterday for NYU and they said you need a portfolio or audition to get into Tisch.

Like I said...I've written nothing

I can explain this in my supplement and make my case that is unfair to be punished for just discovering what I love, but I'm worried about the whole portfolio dilemma.

How do I submit one?
Not that I even have one
Is it through the Common app
Maybe I can put something together quickly?

Basically what do I do

You will NEED a portfolio. Look on the Major information on the Tisch website.

NO you can"'t get into Tisch with no experience. The portfolio is a requirement for that reason - you don’t get into Tisch because you’d like to try screen writing. You get into Tisch because you’ve done screen writing and have a proven track record showing you’re really good at it. Even with extensive experience, it’s extremely hard to get into. Would you try to get into CalTech or MIT without a math class?
Your chance is to work on that portfolio & experience, and apply as a graduate applicant, after college. Therefore you should choose an undergraduate school that will give you considerable experience in writing and perhaps filming. I’m thinking Kenyon or Occidental, for example.

My daughter is attending Tisch film for television. The portfolio has 4 components: resume, 4 page short story, collaborative statement and there are a couple of options for the 4th components short film, screenplay, photographs or storyboard. Read the instructions. It is 50% admission based on academics and 50% portfolio. Your grades and SATs are fine. The portfolio does not go on the common app-it is submitted directly to Tisch. It is a lot of work. My daughter absolutely loves it there. The portfolio needs thought.
